Hey everyone! Melissa here. If you’re a military spouse or a photographer facing a big move, you know how daunting it can be to think about relocating your business. Allison and I have been through this nine times between us, and we’ve learned a lot along the way. In our latest podcast episode, we shared some actionable steps to help you create that fear of missing out (FOMO) before you move. Here’s a quick recap of what we discussed.
First things first, decide when you’re going to stop taking sessions. This gives you a clear date to communicate to your clients. For me, I usually cut off my calendar about a month before the move to ensure I have enough time for editing and delivering final products. Allison, on the other hand, is more flexible and has even taken sessions right up until the day before a move!
Use your existing email list and social media platforms to let everyone know you’re leaving. Create a sense of urgency by telling them, “If you want a session with me, now is the time!” Send out emails, post on Instagram and Facebook, and even reach out directly to your favorite clients. The goal is to fill up your calendar before you go.
Mini sessions are a fantastic way to get a cash infusion before the move. I did one last round of mini sessions before leaving Virginia and made about $10,000 in a day. It’s a great way to see old clients and meet new ones. Just make sure you’re priced profitably!
If you need to update your portfolio, do it before you move. Whether it’s headshots, branding, motherhood, or newborn sessions, take advantage of the network you already have. I did a newborn model call before leaving Virginia Beach, which helped me build my portfolio and connect with new clients.
This was new territory for me, but it was a game-changer. I set up an associate shooter to take on sessions I couldn’t handle during the move. It took some prep work to find the right people, but it was worth it. The sales from those sessions filled a void that otherwise would have been empty.
You can’t say it too much—let your clients know you’re leaving. Use email newsletters, social media posts, and even a notification bar on your website to keep everyone informed. The more you communicate, the more likely you are to fill up your calendar before the move.
Moving your business is never easy, but with a little planning and a lot of communication, you can create that FOMO and keep your business thriving.
