Hey.
00:00:07 [Alison]
I’m Allison, military spouse and family photographer.
00:00:10 [Melissa]
And I’m Melissa, also a military spouse, lifestyle newborn photographer, photographer, and SEO expert for photographers.
00:00:16 [Melissa]
Between the two of us, we have a combined twenty seven years in photography and have lived through nine businesses.
00:00:21 [Alison]
We’ve coached each other through all these challenges privately on Marco Polo, and now we’re bringing our polos public.
00:00:27 [Alison]
On this podcast, we’ll give you actionable steps to help you keep it moving.
00:00:34 [Melissa]
Hey.
00:00:35 [Melissa]
This is the Keep It Moving podcast with Melissa and Allison, and we are starting something new this time around.
00:00:42 [Melissa]
We are going to be doing some mini mentoring episodes.
00:00:46 [Melissa]
We put out a call and asked people to submit, and our guest today was one of the first ones.
00:00:50 [Melissa]
And so we’re super excited with her about moving her business and find out where she’s at and see if Allison and I can give her some tips and stuff to, budge the needle on moving her business.
00:01:00 [Melissa]
So let’s go ahead.
00:01:01 [Melissa]
Allison, you wanna introduce our guest?
00:01:03 [Alison]
Yes.
00:01:03 [Alison]
Okay.
00:01:04 [Alison]
So Allison here, and we have another Allison who spells it correctly with one l.
00:01:08 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:01:09 [Alison]
So Allison, okay.
00:01:10 [Alison]
Thank you so much for your willingness to be here to share, like, some insider information about your business and some of the things you’re going to struggle with.
00:01:17 [Alison]
So will you just tell us who you are, what you do and where you are right now?
00:01:22 [Alison H.]
Okay.
00:01:23 [Alison H.]
I’m Alison H..
00:01:24 [Alison H.]
I am a film family photographer.
00:01:27 [Alison H.]
I am in Albuquerque at the moment and I’ve had my business for seven years and I love it.
00:01:35 [Alison H.]
I have lots of things on Instagram and Facebook, and I have done some education stuff and I just love creativity and film and families.
00:01:44 [Alison H.]
That’s totally my jam.
00:01:46 [Alison H.]
I am currently in Albuquerque, but we are moving to San Diego, but not until 2025, anywhere from January to June.
00:01:55 [Alison H.]
Not exactly sure when that’s happening.
00:01:57 [Alison]
Okay.
00:01:57 [Alison]
And
00:01:57 [Alison H.]
my situation is I, yeah.
00:01:59 [Alison H.]
So my situation is kind of funky here.
00:02:02 [Alison H.]
My website got killed.
00:02:04 [Alison H.]
Oops.
00:02:04 [Alison H.]
So I, oh, it was so traumatic.
00:02:07 [Alison H.]
It was awful.
00:02:08 [Alison H.]
It was awful.
00:02:09 [Alison H.]
Anyway, it’s a long story, but the website is gone.
00:02:12 [Alison H.]
I’ve come to peace with it.
00:02:13 [Alison H.]
I am now peace with that website being gone, but I lost all my blogging content.
00:02:17 [Alison H.]
I was on the first page of Google here and it’s gone.
00:02:19 [Alison H.]
So I am building for like my business here.
00:02:24 [Alison H.]
And I’m just like, I
00:02:26 [Alison H.]
need to have a conversation.
00:02:27 [Alison H.]
I have told you I had a weird situation.
00:02:29 [Alison H.]
Like it’s weird.
00:02:30 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:02:31 [Alison H.]
So I’m like juggling Albuquerque and San Diego SEO right now.
00:02:36 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:02:37 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:02:37 [Alison]
You just hit.
00:02:38 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:02:38 [Alison]
That’s exactly what it is for you’re managing two businesses for a hot minute, for sure.
00:02:43 [Alison]
That’s how, but hold on.
00:02:45 [Alison H.]
How did it die?
00:02:46 [Alison H.]
How did your website like, oh, please.
00:02:48 [Alison H.]
I have no idea.
00:02:50 [Alison]
So was it a code
00:02:51 [Alison H.]
you say?
00:02:52 [Alison H.]
Was
00:02:52 [Alison]
it a design?
00:02:53 [Alison]
Like maybe the design, like it needed to be updated and we just was, I had that happen one time where I didn’t update the PHP language and I like almost,
00:03:02 [Alison H.]
it was GoDaddy.
00:03:03 [Alison H.]
And they said that I was doing something illegal.
00:03:07 [Alison H.]
I’m like, how, what?
00:03:09 [Alison H.]
They don’t give me the health play kids without shirts on my website, which I absolutely could.
00:03:14 [Alison H.]
And it would still be totally okay.
00:03:17 [Alison H.]
They said that the website, if I paid this much money, I could get it back.
00:03:21 [Alison H.]
If I did hate this agenda, this much money, I spent so much money trying to get it back.
00:03:25 [Alison H.]
And finally they’re like, oh yeah, we just can’t give it back to you.
00:03:28 [Alison H.]
I was like, oh my gosh.
00:03:29 [Melissa]
Do you still have to get a URL or did you have to get a whole new URL?
00:03:33 [Alison H.]
No, I have the same URL, but like all the links I had in Pinterest are gone and all the time, the blog, the blogs are gone.
00:03:43 [Alison H.]
Exactly stuff
00:03:44 [Alison]
that you can’t replace.
00:03:46 [Alison H.]
There were some tears.
00:03:47 [Alison H.]
There were some tears.
00:03:48 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:03:49 [Alison H.]
That’s horrifying.
00:03:51 [Alison H.]
That was terrible.
00:03:52 [Alison H.]
That’s bizarre to you.
00:03:53 [Alison H.]
Thank you.
00:03:54 [Alison H.]
Well, I
00:03:55 [Alison H.]
hope it happens to
00:03:56 [Alison H.]
no one.
00:03:56 [Alison H.]
I have pushed this on nobody ever.
00:03:58 [Alison]
A year and a half ago.
00:03:59 [Alison]
Okay.
00:04:00 [Alison]
So what have you done since?
00:04:01 [Alison]
Like how long did you, how long, so if it first started a year and a half ago, how long did you spend trying to fix it?
00:04:06 [Alison]
And then when did you come to grips and pivot?
00:04:08 [Alison H.]
It took me a couple months to figure out, okay, if I’ve got to start from scratch, do I want to go from here?
00:04:13 [Alison H.]
I don’t have the money to hire someone to build me a whole new website.
00:04:17 [Alison H.]
So I’m going to have to do it myself, which is like, oh, that’s also someone I like something I wish on nobody ever.
00:04:23 [Alison H.]
And so it took me a while to like, figure out which direction I wanted to go and then to build my website and then to start blogging.
00:04:33 [Alison H.]
So it’s, I’ve only really been hitting the SEO stuff really hard for six months.
00:04:37 [Alison H.]
Like it hasn’t been a very long time.
00:04:40 [Alison H.]
I had some other stuff happening.
00:04:42 [Alison H.]
When I have multiple, everybody has multiple income buckets.
00:04:45 [Alison H.]
Right.
00:04:45 [Alison H.]
Or at least they should.
00:04:46 [Alison H.]
So I had other income buckets.
00:04:47 [Alison H.]
So we’re taking up some time of mine and it just got put on the back burner.
00:04:53 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:04:53 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:04:53 [Alison]
That’s such a big project.
00:04:55 [Alison]
I don’t blame you at all.
00:04:56 [Alison]
That’s so much sense.
00:04:59 [Alison]
So much sense.
00:05:00 [Alison]
Okay.
00:05:00 [Melissa]
Who are you hosting with now?
00:05:02 [Melissa]
Are you still with GoDaddy or did you switch over to somebody else?
00:05:04 [Alison]
I was gonna switch over one from them.
00:05:06 [Alison]
Good for you.
00:05:06 [Alison H.]
I ran.
00:05:07 [Alison H.]
I ran.
00:05:07 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:05:08 [Alison H.]
I’m with Squarespace.
00:05:09 [Alison H.]
They’re hosting it, and my website’s with Squarespace.
00:05:11 [Alison H.]
I did a bunch of research.
00:05:13 [Alison H.]
I thought about doing it through who’s the other one supposed to be able to stick with this, you know, show it.
00:05:17 [Alison H.]
And I was just like, I just felt like Squarespace was what I needed to do with where, where I was at with how easy it was to use.
00:05:25 [Alison H.]
Cause I just was already stressed to the max and I’m really proud of what I’ve built.
00:05:30 [Alison H.]
I think it’s a fantastic website.
00:05:32 [Alison H.]
I’ve had some help marketing wise of building a good website.
00:05:36 [Alison H.]
And then, so now I’ve started blogging.
00:05:38 [Alison H.]
And what I also have done is tried to create.
00:05:44 [Alison H.]
Cause you can’t have two homepages, but I have a second homepage quote, unquote, which is just a page for that’s SEO for San Diego family photographer.
00:05:53 [Alison H.]
And it has this loop to keep them in that loop instead of on my website, instead of having it go to the Albuquerque stuff.
00:06:00 [Alison H.]
Does that make sense?
00:06:01 [Alison H.]
So like I have a separate blog.
00:06:04 [Alison H.]
I have a separate information page.
00:06:06 [Alison H.]
All of the headers and the footers are removed.
00:06:08 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:06:09 [Alison H.]
So the headers are removed.
00:06:11 [Alison H.]
So just keep them
00:06:12 [Alison]
Two websites then?
00:06:14 [Alison]
It’s how do you have a separate blog?
00:06:15 [Alison]
Are you just doing separating by categories and tag?
00:06:19 [Alison H.]
In square.
00:06:19 [Alison H.]
So I see you can have multiple blogs on the same web site.
00:06:22 [Alison H.]
I know.
00:06:22 [Alison H.]
Interesting.
00:06:23 [Alison H.]
Good information to know.
00:06:24 [Alison]
Mhmm.
00:06:24 [Alison]
Okay.
00:06:25 [Alison H.]
That sounds so it’s a lot.
00:06:27 [Alison H.]
So I’m like, it is complicated.
00:06:31 [Alison H.]
So I’m not like pushing a ton at the San Diego blog, but then on my main blog, because that’s what Google is seeing more.
00:06:37 [Alison H.]
I’ve noticed my analytic wise, it’s going to my main website, which like it’s the same website, but the main pages I am blogging for both Albuquerque and San Diego.
00:06:47 [Alison H.]
And I don’t know if that’s right.
00:06:48 [Alison H.]
I don’t know if I’m Lee.
00:06:50 [Alison H.]
I know, but I’ve heard it’s never too early.
00:06:53 [Alison H.]
So I’m doing both.
00:06:55 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:06:55 [Alison H.]
Should I do the right thing?
00:06:57 [Melissa]
It’s never too early.
00:06:58 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:06:58 [Alison]
You’ve plenty of time, especially when you don’t have anything.
00:07:02 [Alison]
You have nothing.
00:07:03 [Alison]
You’re starting from scratch.
00:07:04 [Alison]
You have no longevity.
00:07:05 [Alison]
You have no history.
00:07:06 [Alison]
You have no authority on anything from anywhere.
00:07:09 [Alison]
No.
00:07:09 [Alison]
So you can’t do too much.
00:07:11 [Alison]
Right?
00:07:11 [Alison]
It’s just a matter of what your focus of effort is gonna be and needs to be based on what you’re capable of of of doing.
00:07:18 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:07:18 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:07:19 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:07:19 [Melissa]
And you still have another year where you move.
00:07:22 [Melissa]
Maybe so.
00:07:23 [Melissa]
Yes.
00:07:24 [Alison]
Nine nine months.
00:07:24 [Alison]
Possibly.
00:07:25 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:07:26 [Melissa]
Hey, fellow photographers.
00:07:27 [Melissa]
Melissa Arlena here.
00:07:28 [Melissa]
Does SEO feel super overwhelming to you?
00:07:31 [Melissa]
I get it.
00:07:32 [Melissa]
But guess what?
00:07:33 [Melissa]
SEO doesn’t have to be complicated.
00:07:35 [Melissa]
I’ve spent fifteen years in photography and ten years in IT before that, cracking the SEO code so that you don’t have to.

00:07:59 [Melissa]
Visit pictureperfectrankings.com.
00:08:01 [Melissa]
And let’s make SEO simple and effective for you.
00:08:04 [Melissa]
Let’s get your calendar booked.
00:08:06 [Melissa]
So then my first question would be, do you need to still be building Albuquerque, or should you actually just shift the focus to San Diego?
00:08:14 [Alison H.]
I would I would agree.
00:08:15 [Melissa]
I think so.
00:08:16 [Melissa]
I think you shift the focus to San Diego now because it’s gonna take time.
00:08:20 [Melissa]
Like, you know, I’m asking for a blog post.
00:08:22 [Melissa]
It’s gonna take time.
00:08:23 [Melissa]
So my worry would be you’re putting that effort into Albuquerque by the time you hit San Diego.
00:08:27 [Melissa]
Now all those Albuquerque posts are, like, ranking really well, and you’re like, great.
00:08:31 [Melissa]
But I’m not there anymore.
00:08:32 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:08:33 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:08:33 [Melissa]
I’m okay.
00:08:34 [Melissa]
Business in Albuquerque again?
00:08:36 [Alison H.]
Seven years.
00:08:37 [Melissa]
Seven years.
00:08:38 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:08:38 [Melissa]
So do you have a client list that to reach out to of, hey, this is the last fall family sessions I’m doing.
00:08:44 [Melissa]
These are the last summer ones and stuff like that.
00:08:47 [Alison H.]
I do.
00:08:48 [Alison H.]
I never got like a massive client in Albuquerque is a weird market, but I do have some clients and I do have a decent Instagram following, which that’s also been funky, but yeah, I was wondering that too.
00:09:02 [Alison H.]
Am I just wasting my time writing?
00:09:04 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:09:06 [Melissa]
Because honestly, when we were, yeah.
00:09:09 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:09:09 [Melissa]
I think having that timeframe to for those posts and stuff like that, I would leave up the Albuquerque pages right now in those posts.
00:09:15 [Melissa]
But going forward, I would focus on San Diego and getting that built up because that’s gonna be where you’re at long term.
00:09:20 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:09:21 [Melissa]
Worst case, if I was like, I really need to be showing up for Albuquerque at the moment, I might even, at that point, look for Google Ads to just get me through the next couple of months kinda thing.
00:09:30 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:09:31 [Alison]
And
00:09:31 [Melissa]
then keep focusing my SEO on San Diego.
00:09:34 [Melissa]
So my efforts are there, and maybe I’m putting some money here, but that that quicker wick jumped to the top for the temporary time being.
00:09:41 [Melissa]
I don’t think it’s a long term solution because it can get expensive.
00:09:44 [Melissa]
But then when you get then when you get to San Diego, now you’ve got all these blog posts underneath of you.
00:09:49 [Melissa]
You’ve got more of your SEO juice there, and I think that would be probably a better use of your time is to focus on San Diego.
00:09:56 [Alison H.]
Okay.
00:09:57 [Alison]
A 100%.
00:09:57 [Alison]
Because if you land if y’all move January 2025 and you’re blogging steadily, consistently with high quality SEO content
00:10:06 [Alison H.]
Mhmm.
00:10:07 [Alison]
Starting like now, you could have paid in January.
00:10:10 [Alison H.]
Okay.
00:10:11 [Alison H.]
Okay.
00:10:11 [Alison H.]
I’ll do that switch.
00:10:13 [Alison H.]
I’ll make that switch.
00:10:14 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:10:14 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:10:14 [Melissa]
And I would leave the the two sites separated.
00:10:17 [Melissa]
So that way you still got your Albuquerque sites and stuff.
00:10:20 [Melissa]
And I would just leave the blog as it is
00:10:22 [Alison H.]
And just
00:10:22 [Melissa]
be like, okay.
00:10:22 [Melissa]
This is where the blog is.
00:10:23 [Melissa]
I’m not publishing more Albuquerque posts.
00:10:25 [Melissa]
It just is what it is.
00:10:27 [Melissa]
But then keep that San Diego separate.
00:10:28 [Melissa]
I like that idea because it is so far out right now.
00:10:32 [Melissa]
That that way, they don’t get confused because now they’re seeing like, Alison H. and I have done this when we moved where we’ve, like, started up the hidden page for that new location to at least get it right and figure out keywords, and then gone ahead and said, okay.
00:10:43 [Melissa]
Now we’re gonna make that switch and go live with this one where everyone can see it.
00:10:49 [Alison H.]
Okay.
00:10:49 [Alison H.]
When you make that switch, do you then make that temporary homepage, your homepage, or do you like change the keywords in the homepage that Google is recognizing more?
00:11:01 [Alison H.]
Makes sense.
00:11:01 [Melissa]
I think with Squarespace.
00:11:02 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:11:03 [Melissa]
Cause like for us, we have to actually then go to our homepage and yeah.
00:11:07 [Melissa]
Update it.
00:11:08 [Melissa]
I think actually with show it or whatever, you could just duplicate it in the right direction.
00:11:13 [Melissa]
But, yeah, you basically do wanna change over that your homepage would then be whatever the old the homepage that is currently that hidden page.
00:11:20 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:11:21 [Alison]
Okay.
00:11:21 [Alison]
Basically, what I had done is created a second family page, that hidden family page that was targeting Hawaii.
00:11:27 [Alison]
And then once I pulled everything off Virginia Beach, I took what was on that family page.
00:11:32 [Alison]
My primary targeted keyword for Oahu became my home page, and then I changed something to that was similar, like Hawaii family photos that’s still was pertinent and I wanted it to rank for, but was secondary to the primary.
00:11:43 [Alison]
So redirect it.
00:11:44 [Melissa]
So you could take then that old page, move it over so you’ve got your homepage with all that info, and then redirect that old page of San Diego family photographer to your homepage.
00:11:53 [Melissa]
If that’s going to be the keyword for the homepage.
00:11:55 [Alison H.]
Oh, that’s a good idea.
00:11:56 [Alison H.]
I didn’t think about that.
00:11:57 [Alison H.]
Okay.
00:11:57 [Melissa]
So then you’re not losing any of that Google juice.
00:11:59 [Melissa]
It’s just saying, Hey, basically this page has moved over to here.
00:12:02 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:12:02 [Alison H.]
Okay.
00:12:03 [Alison H.]
Okay.
00:12:03 [Alison H.]
Awesome.
00:12:04 [Alison]
Okay.
00:12:05 [Alison]
So my other
00:12:05 [Alison H.]
question, so it sounds like I’m doing SEO.
00:12:08 [Alison H.]
Okay.
00:12:08 [Alison H.]
So yay.
00:12:09 [Alison H.]
Yay.
00:12:09 [Alison H.]
For me, pat myself on the back.
00:12:10 [Alison H.]
I’m doing okay.
00:12:11 [Alison H.]
What else do I need to be doing to create before I move?
00:12:17 [Alison H.]
Is there besides SEO?
00:12:19 [Alison H.]
I know you guys have talked about,
00:12:20 [Alison]
so how often are you blogging right now?
00:12:24 [Alison H.]
I blog at least once a week, but that’s probably as far as I
00:12:29 [Alison]
can go.
00:12:30 [Alison]
Content are you blogging?
00:12:33 [Alison H.]
All over the place.
00:12:34 [Alison H.]
Sometimes it’s pertinent to clients.
00:12:36 [Alison H.]
Sometimes it’s because that’s such a travel destination.
00:12:40 [Alison H.]
Sometimes it’s about travel and location, which of course connects with clients and yeah, I’d love to eat or whatever.
00:12:47 [Alison H.]
What I, what is so great about my situation is I have family there and I travel there all the time.
00:12:53 [Alison H.]
Like all the time.
00:12:55 [Alison H.]
So I, I know that, but I know San Diego in and out.
00:12:59 [Alison H.]
I’ve been going since the eighties.
00:13:00 [Alison H.]
And so.
00:13:02 [Alison H.]
Well, that shows you how old I am.
00:13:03 [Alison H.]
Dang it.
00:13:03 [Alison H.]
I did not need to out myself on podcast ladies, like networking and other things like that.
00:13:09 [Alison H.]
Do I need to be doing other stuff or do you want me to just keep going?
00:13:11 [Alison]
You need to be doing whatever you feel comfortable with.
00:13:14 [Alison]
I would I SEO takes so long to bake.
00:13:17 [Alison]
That’s why we always go there.
00:13:18 [Alison]
That’s why we say focus there now because by the time you did anything for Albuquerque, before it did anything for you, you’re gonna be gone.
00:13:24 [Alison]
So Yeah.
00:13:25 [Alison]
That’s why we’re so focused on that website and SEO juice is because it does take so long.
00:13:30 [Alison]
Anything else you’re doing right now is gonna be cherry on top.
00:13:33 [Alison]
Right?
00:13:33 [Alison]
Because how do people most people find you anyway?
00:13:35 [Alison]
Is it Google?
00:13:37 [Alison H.]
It’s usually my website or Instagram.
00:13:39 [Alison H.]
Mhmm.
00:13:39 [Alison]
So, yeah, I think anything extra that you want to do on top of a blogging is just cherry on top for right now.
00:13:44 [Alison]
Like following people on Instagram, building up some San Diego based businesses that you wanted and share and reshare or feature on your blog post.
00:13:53 [Alison]
So that’s another thing that you could be doing for your content is where are the boutiques for kids?
00:13:57 [Alison]
Where are people shopping that could be good for family photos?
00:14:01 [Alison]
Feature two or three of them.
00:14:02 [Alison]
Interview them.
00:14:03 [Alison]
What kind of stuff works for your clients, but also will tell Google, hey, I’m actually in San Diego now.
00:14:09 [Alison]
What kind of interlocking backlinks and web can you draw up.
00:14:14 [Alison]
That’s gonna have this double whammy effect where you’re not only blogging for your own purposes, but you’re linking and creating backlinks where they could reshare the content that you’re creating for them.
00:14:24 [Alison]
You’re championing other people who are still in there, but you’re also helping your clients.
00:14:27 [Alison]
Like and the same thing could it could be for shopping for clothes.
00:14:30 [Alison]
It could be, like, treats.
00:14:31 [Alison]
I was talking earlier this week about it.
00:14:33 [Alison]
Like, her and her both her kids are celiacs.
00:14:35 [Alison]
And so I was like, oh my gosh.
00:14:36 [Alison]
You have to write mom content on gluten free treats for kids, gluten free anything.
00:14:40 [Alison]
She was like, oh, that’s real yeah.
00:14:42 [Alison]
So, like, that kind of stuff that’s really helpful to anybody.
00:14:46 [Speaker 5]
You know what you can trust?
00:14:47 [Speaker 5]
The protection you get when you bundle home an auto insurance with Progressive.
00:14:50 [Speaker 5]
You know what you can’t trust?
00:14:52 [Speaker 5]
Everything else, apparently.
00:14:53 [Speaker 5]
Like when you saw that article that said that thing you eat every day is a superfood and great for your gut health, but then thirty seconds later, a different article warns you to avoid it, and it’s taking years off your life.
00:15:03 [Speaker 5]
Well, is it?
00:15:04 [Speaker 5]
Kind of a big difference there.
00:15:05 [Speaker 5]
Anyway, bundle home and auto insurance with Progressive for reliable coverage in a reliably unreliable world.
00:15:11 [Speaker 5]
Progressive Casualty Insurance Company affiliates and third party insurers.
00:15:13 [Speaker 5]
Not available in all states or situations.
00:15:16 [Speaker 6]
Stop everything.
00:15:17 [Speaker 6]

00:15:37 [Speaker 6]

00:15:39 [Speaker 6]
It’s the price.
00:15:40 [Speaker 6]
Additional requirements may apply.
00:15:41 [Speaker 6]
See dealer for details.
00:15:43 [Speaker 6]
Offers end June 30.
00:15:45 [Speaker 7]
I’m US transportation secretary Sean Duffy.
00:15:47 [Speaker 7]
The sound of a seat belt is one of the most important sounds in our car.
00:15:51 [Speaker 7]
It means everyone is ready and everyone is safe.
00:15:54 [Speaker 7]
Make it a priority.
00:15:55 [Speaker 7]
Buckle up every time.
00:15:56 [Speaker 7]
Hear the sound?
00:15:58 [Speaker 7]
Make it a habit.
00:15:58 [Speaker 7]
Paid for by NHTSA.
00:16:00 [Alison]
On their Internet.
00:16:01 [Alison]
And that way you’re getting your ranking up, but you’re also creating that web.
00:16:04 [Alison]
Okay.
00:16:04 [Alison]
Okay.
00:16:05 [Alison H.]
That makes sense.
00:16:06 [Melissa]
You have the keywords.
00:16:06 [Melissa]
Right?
00:16:07 [Melissa]
Is that the one you have?
00:16:08 [Melissa]
Yes.
00:16:09 [Alison H.]
Yes.
00:16:09 [Alison H.]
Okay.
00:16:09 [Alison H.]
So the keyword research and the blogging one.
00:16:12 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:16:12 [Melissa]
Cool.
00:16:13 [Melissa]
And so within that, because I’m trying to remember when you got it, you have where you can it shows you how to find those keywords for, like, doulas and midwives and baby stores and stuff like that.
00:16:21 [Melissa]
Yes.
00:16:21 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:16:21 [Melissa]
Perfect.
00:16:22 [Melissa]
That’s all I wanna make sure of.
00:16:23 [Melissa]
So, yeah, if you follow that, then that’ll give you the right keywords so you know what to target and stuff.
00:16:27 [Melissa]
But, yeah, I would say and even then linking into Instagram, which Allison can hit on next.
00:16:32 [Melissa]
I don’t know because you’re still in Albuquerque and you’re getting clients from Instagram.
00:16:35 [Melissa]
You obviously don’t wanna shift everything over to San Diego.
00:16:37 [Melissa]
But now I’m just start connecting with those boutiques and those other vendors you could partner with and start following them, commenting on their stuff here and there and get a relationship established.
00:16:47 [Melissa]
And then that will also help open the door for them when you’re like, hey.
00:16:50 [Melissa]
I actually wanna do a blog post on blah blah blah, and I’ve been following these guys for a while.
00:16:55 [Melissa]
Let me reach out to them kind of thing.
00:16:57 [Alison]
That’s exactly how I created my Oahu podcast.
00:17:01 [Alison]
So I have a second podcast.
00:17:02 [Alison]
Billy?
00:17:02 [Alison]
And I I know you do.
00:17:03 [Alison H.]
I haven’t listened to
00:17:04 [Alison H.]
it.
00:17:04 [Alison H.]
Don’t
00:17:05 [Alison H.]
be mad
00:17:05 [Alison H.]
at me.
00:17:05 [Alison H.]
I haven’t listened to it.
00:17:06 [Alison]
Billy?
00:17:07 [Alison]
Fine.
00:17:07 [Alison]
It’s about small business in Hawaii.
00:17:08 [Alison]
So it’s not really personal.
00:17:09 [Alison]
In Hawaii.
00:17:10 [Alison]
But interviewing small businesses.
00:17:12 [Alison]
And the way I found those small businesses before the podcast was live, before I had any links to share or to prove that I had any legitimacy for people to trust me and waste their time with me was through Instagram.
00:17:22 [Alison]
And I started all that while I was still in Virginia Beach.
00:17:25 [Alison]
And my first interview was roller skate Oahu.
00:17:28 [Alison]
And I connected them through them with them through Instagram, because I just liked them.
00:17:33 [Alison]
They were so fun.
00:17:34 [Alison]
They were so like, like just eccentric and cheerful.
00:17:38 [Alison]
And I was like, oh my gosh, I really love this.
00:17:39 [Alison]
But my little tip there, my tip is because Instagram is so fleeting, create a collection of saved posts.
00:17:46 [Alison]
So as you’re scrolling and you find like a really cool boutique or shop or whatever in San Diego, go to their profile, go to their posts, save it in a collection dedicated to San Diego shops.
00:18:00 [Alison]
And then once a week or so, make a Google task, whatever you do to remind yourself to do these things like every few days or once a week or so, and go see what’s new.
00:18:08 [Alison]
Go to those businesses, see what they have new, share their posts, comment, engage with them.
00:18:12 [Alison]
Like, yeah, I think the thing we forget about with social media is we forget to be human ourselves.
00:18:17 [Alison]
We forget to leave the love and the comment and the shares that we want people to do for us.
00:18:22 [Alison]
So just do that for them.
00:18:23 [Alison]
Just do that for other people and that are in the area.
00:18:26 [Alison]
And then they’re gonna see it.
00:18:27 [Alison]
They’re gonna see that share in their DMs and be like, so and so shared.
00:18:30 [Alison]
So and so tagged me.
00:18:31 [Alison]
And they’ll and then when you go to say, hey, I wanna do a feature, they’ll see that history and they’ll be like, oh, this chick’s not just in it for herself.
00:18:40 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:18:40 [Melissa]
It’s not the thing I get every week of we wanna feature your pet in our pet campaign.
00:18:44 [Melissa]
Or I’m like, who
00:18:44 [Alison]
are you?
00:18:45 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:18:45 [Alison H.]
We’re like, not like Matt’s
00:18:47 [Alison]
or the emails of, hey, we noticed your Google ranking needs to be higher.
00:18:50 [Alison]
And I’m like, how did you find?
00:18:53 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:18:53 [Alison]
I think it was on Google.
00:18:55 [Alison]
We Definitely
00:18:57 [Alison H.]
they’ll give you a more genuine connection.
00:18:59 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:18:59 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:19:00 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:19:00 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:19:00 [Alison]
Exactly.
00:19:01 [Alison]
And then you’ve got the scouting trips, you’ve got the content, you’ve got everything.
00:19:04 [Alison]
You can you got a nice little package.
00:19:07 [Alison H.]
This is really good.
00:19:07 [Alison H.]
I’m trying.
00:19:08 [Alison H.]
Oh my gosh.
00:19:09 [Alison H.]
I’ve been working my butt off trying to do this.
00:19:12 [Alison]
Yes.
00:19:12 [Alison]
Have you the next thing is, have you announced this to your clients?
00:19:15 [Alison]
Do people now acknowledge?
00:19:17 [Alison]
Oh, in case anybody’s listening.
00:19:18 [Alison]
Nope.
00:19:21 [Alison H.]
Albuquerque people are not listening to me on my podcast because I have my other income bucket is analog film education.
00:19:28 [Alison H.]
And that’s my podcast.
00:19:30 [Alison H.]
Those people, other photographers are the ones who listen to that podcast, not my clients.
00:19:34 [Alison H.]
And we can’t truly announce it until my husband sells his business.
00:19:38 [Alison]
Oh, gotcha.
00:19:40 [Alison]
Okay.
00:19:41 [Alison]
And that’s why you don’t know.
00:19:43 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:19:43 [Alison H.]
I’ve been spending more time there and like splitting my time more.
00:19:48 [Alison H.]
I’ve been using that because I do, I do spend time down there often, but see you Albuquerque piece out.
00:19:55 [Alison H.]
I haven’t done that yet.
00:19:56 [Alison]
And there’s not going to be much headway.
00:19:58 [Alison]
Is there, there’s not going to be much like, oh, it’s sold.
00:20:01 [Alison]
Hey, buy two weeks.
00:20:02 [Alison]
Are you going to have a month?
00:20:03 [Alison H.]
Are you
00:20:03 [Melissa]
going to have
00:20:03 [Alison H.]
what my husband’s business?
00:20:05 [Alison H.]
I don’t know.
00:20:05 [Alison H.]
It could take a little bit.
00:20:07 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:20:07 [Alison H.]
We’ll see.
00:20:08 [Alison H.]
I don’t know.
00:20:09 [Alison H.]
But in that transition time, I don’t know how long we can.
00:20:12 [Alison H.]
That’s up to us.
00:20:13 [Alison H.]
We can choose how long it’ll take for us to move.
00:20:16 [Alison]
Okay.
00:20:17 [Alison]
So then you could is I’ll forgive my West Coast knowledge, but how far is Albuquerque from San Diego?
00:20:25 [Alison]
If you’re going to San Diego often now, is it theoretically, you could just come back for a couple of weeks every now and then to just shoot after you actually move?
00:20:33 [Alison H.]
I could, but I don’t think it’s worth it because That is
00:20:36 [Alison]
a very good insight.
00:20:38 [Alison H.]
The price price point here is so low.
00:20:41 [Alison H.]
I’m so excited to go to San Diego and raise my prices.
00:20:44 [Alison H.]
It wouldn’t be worth it.
00:20:46 [Alison H.]
Woo hoo.
00:20:46 [Alison H.]
Virtual high five
00:20:47 [Alison H.]
for raising prices.
00:20:49 [Alison H.]
They keep on so excited.
00:20:51 [Alison H.]
Charge what I’m worth, finally.
00:20:53 [Alison]

00:21:08 [Alison]

00:21:09 [Alison]
Starting over again just sucks.
00:21:11 [Alison]

00:21:54 [Alison]
That’s alison with one l a l I s o n b e l l dot co right now.
00:22:02 [Alison H.]
Yes.
00:22:02 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:22:02 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:22:03 [Alison H.]
Yes.
00:22:03 [Alison]
And what you’re worth because our time is valuable.
00:22:05 [Alison]
K.
00:22:06 [Alison H.]
It’s not just great.
00:22:07 [Alison]
It’s so many since so much Oh.
00:22:09 [Alison]
So
00:22:09 [Alison H.]
much work.
00:22:10 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:22:10 [Alison]
I’ve been thinking about this a lot.
00:22:12 [Alison H.]
I realize I don’t think clients other photographers totally get it.
00:22:15 [Alison H.]
Clients don’t realize that it’s
00:22:17 [Alison]
not just the camera
00:22:18 [Alison H.]
I pick up and the hour I spend with them.
00:22:20 [Alison H.]
It is solely
00:22:21 [Alison]
It’s triple your time.
00:22:22 [Speaker 5]
Yeah.
00:22:22 [Alison]
And then it’s triple the investment because of the gear we’re gonna have to replace, the computer it takes that we have to now subscribe to instead of buy outright.
00:22:30 [Alison]
Don’t get me started on Lightroom subscriptions.
00:22:32 [Alison]
That really pissed me off.
00:22:35 [Alison]
Everything.
00:22:36 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:22:37 [Alison]
Everything.
00:22:37 [Alison]
Okay.
00:22:38 [Alison]
So you can’t so you can’t reverse engineer a timeline because you can’t announce it because you have no idea.
00:22:44 [Alison H.]
All right.
00:22:44 [Alison H.]
But especially do know it’ll be nice.
00:22:47 [Alison H.]
And I will do that.
00:22:48 [Alison H.]
I will like announce it and start planning everything out.
00:22:52 [Alison H.]
I thought about doing spring, like minis before I move out there if we have not left yet, but I’m sure we’ll all have announced it by then.
00:23:01 [Alison H.]
I’m hoping.
00:23:02 [Alison]
What do
00:23:02 [Speaker 8]
you do
00:23:02 [Alison H.]
with clients who reach out to you when it’s too early?
00:23:05 [Alison]
That’s a unique situation and it’s, I would do it on case by case.
00:23:08 [Alison]
If it’s for the, like a fall rush, maybe pick a time that you go stay with your family for, a long weekend and you say, hey, I will be there this time frame.
00:23:18 [Alison]
That’s your time frame and that’s it.
00:23:19 [Alison]
And just stay positive and this is and if it doesn’t work out, cancel your trip.
00:23:23 [Alison H.]
Exactly.
00:23:24 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:23:24 [Alison]
And then and that would be a time where that might be worthwhile because of the cultural immediacy of everybody wanting the Christmas cards.
00:23:30 [Alison]
Right?
00:23:31 [Alison]
Harder in the spring.
00:23:32 [Alison]
Harder to create that demand.
00:23:34 [Alison]
The demand in the time frame isn’t there in the same way.
00:23:37 [Alison H.]
Okay.
00:23:38 [Alison H.]
So
00:23:38 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:23:39 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:23:39 [Alison]
I
00:23:39 [Melissa]
would say The other thing would be so we talked about blogging and website.
00:23:44 [Melissa]
We talked about Instagram.
00:23:45 [Melissa]
The other thing I would say is working on trying to build your email list for out there Mhmm.
00:23:49 [Melissa]
Early.
00:23:50 [Alison H.]
Okay.
00:23:50 [Melissa]
And I would do that with blog posts.
00:23:52 [Melissa]
So, basically, once you’ve gotten is your focus families or newborns or what was that again?
00:23:56 [Melissa]
It’s family.
00:23:57 [Melissa]
Right?
00:23:57 [Alison H.]
It’s families, but I do newborn maternity and seniors.
00:24:01 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:24:01 [Melissa]
So I would look at once you’ve gotten a couple blog posts, let’s say it’s for families and you’re doing posts on, like, best restaurants or best beaches, just something along those lines, you could put those together into, a freebie download and have it in each of your blog posts.
00:24:17 [Melissa]
So if they land on let’s say they land on, where to travel or where to stay in San Diego if you have kids or something like that.
00:24:23 [Melissa]
And then you’re like, hey.
00:24:23 [Melissa]
If you enjoyed this post, click here, and you can download our guide to the best restaurants for kids, the best things to do with kids in San Diego.
00:24:31 [Melissa]
Like, you can think about all these blog post topics of things you can write that are based on San Diego and then get them on your list.
00:24:37 [Melissa]
And the thing is that’s more of, like, a travel perspective kinda thing, but you could get for newborn and maternity, like, the doulas and the midwives and the birthing centers and stuff like that.
00:24:46 [Alison H.]
Okay.
00:24:46 [Melissa]
And just try and have that as, like, a freebie download.
00:24:49 [Melissa]
So just when you look at your blog post, step back in once a month and look at them and say, okay.
00:24:53 [Melissa]
Could I put a couple of these together and make it that into something that could be downloaded?
00:24:58 [Melissa]
Like, just a PDF is really all you’re looking for.
00:25:00 [Melissa]
And you just copy and paste from those blog posts and then make it so that way they’re getting on your list early, that kind of thing.
00:25:06 [Alison]
And I would even maybe not a project for right now, but as you’re creating those lead magnet, I would create them for each so, like, newborn maternity is gonna be one.
00:25:14 [Alison]
Your seniors are gonna want something different, and then your families are gonna want something different.
00:25:18 [Alison]
So it could get pretty, like, gnarly and complicated in your back end, but having three lead magnets that lead to three different email drips and segments based on what that and just when it comes to that, don’t get overwhelmed.
00:25:31 [Alison]
Just focus on the thing that brings you the most profit or the most joy Mhmm.
00:25:35 [Alison]
Or both.
00:25:36 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:25:36 [Alison H.]
Uh-huh.
00:25:36 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:25:37 [Melissa]
And even for family is a good one because if they’re local and stuff and you hit more of that local thing, like what to do on a rainy day or something like that, like, you can pivot some of those.
00:25:45 [Melissa]
But then they’re gonna need family photos every year.
00:25:47 [Melissa]
They’re gonna want them.
00:25:48 [Melissa]
So even if you get them on your list before you’ve moved there, they’re still on your list.
00:25:52 [Melissa]
And then I wouldn’t say you necessarily need a huge welcome sequence.
00:25:54 [Melissa]
So now you could just deliver the freebie and then just be putting out, like, maybe some tips and advice for families.
00:25:59 [Melissa]
And then as you get closer to moving there, now you can start being that whole, hey.
00:26:04 [Melissa]
Have you thought about family sessions or are we talking spring or something like that?
00:26:07 [Melissa]
And start grooming them a little bit more at that point, but at least you’re getting them on your list kind of thing.
00:26:13 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:26:13 [Alison H.]
I haven’t thought of that.
00:26:14 [Alison H.]
That’s a great idea.
00:26:15 [Alison H.]
Thank you.
00:26:15 [Alison]
That’s awesome.
00:26:16 [Alison]
All right.
00:26:16 [Alison]
Do you have any questions for us?
00:26:18 [Alison]
No.
00:26:19 [Alison]
All right.
00:26:20 [Alison]
Okay.
00:26:20 [Alison]
So we talked about, so just to recap, thanks.
00:26:24 [Alison H.]
We talked about, I’m just wanted to hear.
00:26:28 [Alison H.]
You want to like, put your hair out.
00:26:29 [Alison H.]
You guys are so great to offer this information because photographers don’t go to school for SEO.
00:26:35 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:26:36 [Alison]
No, that’s not hard to do any of this.
00:26:37 [Alison]
We figured it all out ourselves.
00:26:39 [Alison H.]
That’s why we’re here because it’s
00:26:41 [Alison H.]
too damn hard to not share it.
00:26:43 [Alison H.]
Yes.
00:26:43 [Alison H.]
Hard.
00:26:44 [Alison H.]
Thank you.
00:26:44 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:26:44 [Alison H.]
Thank you.
00:26:45 [Alison H.]
There’s nothing you have to say.
00:26:46 [Alison H.]
But yeah.
00:26:47 [Alison]
So so our focus for you though, for Allison, we want you to shift focus solely on San Diego from now.
00:26:52 [Alison]
Don’t pull anything off about Albuquerque.
00:26:54 [Alison]
Let Albuquerque bake and sit, but shift and put all your effort into new location.
00:26:59 [Alison]
You’re gonna if you need it, Google Ads for Albuquerque.
00:27:02 [Alison]
Facebook Ads too.
00:27:03 [Alison]
Those are really some of the retargeting ads have been incredibly powerful for me here in Hawaii.
00:27:07 [Alison]
And then you’re already doing scouting trips for your blogging content.
00:27:10 [Alison]
You already know what you’re gonna be doing there.
00:27:12 [Alison]
And then think about creating a lead magnet to build up that email list.
00:27:16 [Alison]
You could do multiple genres or one, just focus on one that’s most profitable.
00:27:19 [Alison]
And then you’re networking on Instagram so that you can in turn do some features and content and collaborations once you get there.
00:27:27 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:27:27 [Alison H.]
Okay.
00:27:28 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:27:28 [Alison]
Sounds like a good for me.
00:27:29 [Alison]
Like, Austin, does she need to be blogging, Melissa?
00:27:31 [Alison]
How long
00:27:31 [Melissa]
does she take?
00:27:31 [Melissa]
Oh, I like the once a week.
00:27:33 [Melissa]
I like the once a week, especially since she’s got time, time to bake that in and stuff.
00:27:36 [Melissa]
If you get there and you’re like, I wanna, like, super jolt something, you could bump up a couple times a week, but you’ll burn out real fast.
00:27:43 [Melissa]
So so Okay.
00:27:45 [Melissa]
I would say once a week is a good one to aim for.
00:27:47 [Melissa]
And Yeah.
00:27:48 [Melissa]
You can even mix it up with FAQs and then, obviously, the full blog posts about, like, locations and genres or not genres, vendors and stuff like that.
00:27:57 [Melissa]
But Mhmm.
00:27:58 [Melissa]
You don’t have not every post you write has to be, okay, a thousand words on something today.
00:28:02 [Melissa]
Don’t stress yourself out over that.
00:28:04 [Melissa]
Mix things up and everything.
00:28:06 [Melissa]
And I would just make sure your FAQs are more San Diego specific.
00:28:09 [Melissa]
So it could be what’s the best I I think with San Diego, all year long is, like, the best time to have photos and stuff.
00:28:14 [Melissa]
It’s like Allison learned best time of day.
00:28:16 [Melissa]
She’s found out in Hawaii it’s morning, not not evening.
00:28:19 [Melissa]
Sunrise.
00:28:20 [Melissa]
No.
00:28:20 [Alison H.]
Rains in the afternoon.
00:28:22 [Alison H.]
I know it rains.
00:28:23 [Alison H.]
Does it?
00:28:23 [Alison H.]
Does that And you’re only in the winter.
00:28:25 [Alison]
Only in the winter.
00:28:26 [Alison]
It and only on the windward side.
00:28:27 [Alison]
So it depends on what part of Oahu you’re in.
00:28:30 [Alison]
It depends on what season you’re in.
00:28:32 [Alison]
And I used to I swore off sunrise sessions, and now it’s the only thing I’ll do.
00:28:35 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:28:36 [Alison]
Oh, you could be that person.
00:28:38 [Alison]
Like
00:28:39 [Melissa]
There could be some San Diego specific things that you think about when it comes to the FAQs.
00:28:43 [Melissa]
And so we just keep that in mind.
00:28:44 [Melissa]
Keep in mind now that your ideal client you’re writing for is in San Diego.
00:28:48 [Melissa]
Just have that thought process as you filter your blog post through.
00:28:51 [Melissa]
This is for my San Diego client.
00:28:52 [Melissa]
What are they like?
00:28:54 [Alison H.]
Okay.
00:28:54 [Alison H.]
I can do that.
00:28:55 [Alison]
I can do And we’ve got all the tools to do it well too.
00:28:58 [Alison]
You’re good to go.
00:28:59 [Alison]
You’re all set.
00:29:00 [Alison]
Thank you.
00:29:01 [Alison]
That’s awesome.
00:29:02 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:29:02 [Alison]
Thanks.
00:29:04 [Alison]
Or, Allison,
00:29:04 [Alison H.]
you are capable of this.
00:29:06 [Alison]
You are gonna do so good, and you have plenty of time.
00:29:08 [Alison]
You have plenty of time to do
00:29:09 [Melissa]
it well.
00:29:10 [Alison]
But don’t, like, don’t get complacent in that.
00:29:12 [Alison]
Once a week, stay the course, but keep your head up because you’re doing awesome.
00:29:17 [Alison H.]
I will.
00:29:18 [Alison H.]
I will.
00:29:18 [Alison H.]
I want this.
00:29:19 [Alison H.]
I want this move so bad.
00:29:20 [Alison H.]
This is happening.
00:29:21 [Alison H.]
Yeah.
00:29:21 [Alison H.]
No.
00:29:22 [Alison H.]
That’s the tenacity
00:29:23 [Alison]
you need.
00:29:24 [Alison]
That is the tenacity you need to make.
00:29:26 [Alison]
And you’re you’ve got it.
00:29:27 [Alison]
So you’re good.
00:29:28 [Alison]
All set.
00:29:29 [Alison]
Thanks.
00:29:29 [Alison]
Awesome.
00:29:29 [Alison]
Thank you so much, Allison.
00:29:31 [Alison H.]
Oh, it was my pleasure.
00:29:32 [Alison H.]
Thank you for having me on.
00:29:33 [Alison H.]
I so appreciate it.
00:29:37 [Melissa]
Thank you so much for listening.
