I'm Melissa Arlena(my friends call me Mel) and I help photographers get found on Google.
Read more about me
I often see photographers stuck in feast-or-famine income cycles—especially during slow seasons or after a move—even though there’s a simple strategy right in front of them that could create steady monthly revenue. Affiliate marketing for photographers isn’t just about promoting random products – it’s about monetizing the tools and services you’re already using and loving.
As someone who’s generated over $2,000 from a single blog post and built multiple passive income streams through affiliate marketing, I’m going to break down exactly how you can start earning money from the things you’re already recommending to clients and fellow photographers.
But before we dive in—Hi! I’m Melissa, and I’m an SEO expert here to help portrait photographers finally get found by their dream clients on Google—without the technical overwhelm. Whether you need done-for-you SEO services, step-by-step coaching through my proven system, or monthly blogging strategies (like my Blogging Club membership!), I’ve got the tools to transform your invisible website into a client-attracting machine. Ready to stop being the best-kept secret in your market?
If you haven’t already, I’d encourage you to listen to the full podcast episode where Alison & I break down all these strategies in detail. But if you’re ready to get straight to the actionable stuff, this blog post lays it all out for you step-by-step. Either way, you’re going to walk away with concrete strategies you can implement right away.
Think about it – you’re already telling clients about your favorite CRM, recommending editing presets, or suggesting the perfect newborn props. Why not get paid for those recommendations?
Here’s the thing: affiliate marketing works so well for photographers because we’re constantly using and testing tools, gear, and services. Every time I recommend something in my Facebook group or mention a tool I love in a blog post, I’m potentially missing out on income if I don’t have an affiliate relationship set up.
The biggest misconception? That you need to be some mega-influencer. I’ve been using my ProPhoto affiliate code for 16 years now – it’s just MArlena25 – and I’ve probably made at least $100 from that single code over the years. Not life-changing money, but it’s $100 I wouldn’t have had otherwise.
Here’s your checklist of potential affiliate opportunities:
Business Tools & Software:
Photography-Specific Products:
Lifestyle Products for Clients:
Most of these companies list their affiliate programs at the bottom of their websites, or you can Google “[company name] + affiliate program” to find hidden opportunities.
Look, I’m not going to sugarcoat this – randomly posting affiliate links on Instagram isn’t going to make you rich – The real money comes from strategic placement where people are actively looking for solutions.
This is where the magic happens. I wrote a single blog post reviewing the Simple Sales System, optimized it for SEO, and made over $2,000 in two years from that one post. Here’s why this works:
When someone searches “Simple Sales System review,” my post shows up right under the official website. People want honest reviews before investing in courses or tools, and if you can rank for those review terms, you’re golden.
On my website, I have a page specifically for photographers with links to QuickBooks, my CRM, gallery software – everything I use and recommend.
Skip generic lists like “10 Tools I Love” and instead, create problem-solving content that naturally incorporates your affiliate recommendations:
Each post solves a real problem while showcasing tools that provide solutions.
Ready to take your photography business to the next level? This comprehensive approach to affiliate marketing is exactly what we cover in The Blogging Club – monthly blog strategies that not only attract ideal clients but also create additional income streams through strategic affiliate partnerships.
Your email list is your most valuable asset for affiliate marketing. These people already know, like, and trust you, so when you recommend something, they listen.
I’m selective about what I promote to my email list – I stick to higher-payout opportunities or products that are genuinely on sale and offer significant value. You don’t want to overwhelm your audience, but when you have something great to share, your email list should be first to know.
Let’s be honest – affiliate marketing isn’t going to make you a millionaire overnight (unless you become a major influencer, which is a whole different business model). But here’s what it can do:
Small, Consistent Wins:
The Big Opportunities: Course and coaching affiliate programs often pay 30-50% commissions. If you promote a $2,000 course and someone purchases, you could earn $600-1,000 from a single sale.
Most programs pay 30 days after purchase, and many have minimum payout thresholds. Don’t count your affiliate income until it’s actually in your bank account – refunds could reduce your commissions.
Some programs only pay in credits toward their service. While this might work if you’re a heavy user, cash is always preferable for true passive income.
You legally must disclose affiliate relationships. Amazon is particularly strict about this. Include an earnings disclosure statement in your emails and blog posts. For example: “Some links in this post may be affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.”
The ProPhoto Success: 16 years ago, I wrote one blog post about loving ProPhoto with my coupon code MArlena25. I optimized it for “ProPhoto discount” searches and put the code right in my meta description. Fifteen years later, I’m still earning from that single post. (See that post here: https://melissaarlenaphotography.com/photographers/prophoto-blog-theme-discount/)
The Simple Sales System Win: I genuinely loved this course and wrote an honest, SEO-optimized review that has since generated over $2,000 in affiliate income from one blog post. (Read my review here: https://melissaarlenaphotography.com/simple-sales-system-blueprint-review/)
The Amazon Strategy: I have blog posts getting tons of traffic about DIY hospital newborn photos. I created an Amazon storefront with all the props and accessories I mention in the post – swaddles, onesies, letterboards – and earn commissions when people purchase.
