00:00:04 [Alison]
Hey, I’m Allison, military spouse and family photographer.
00:00:07 [Melissa]
And I’m Melissa, also a military spouse, lifestyle newborn photographer, and SEO expert for photographers.
00:00:13 [Melissa]
Between the two of us, we have a combined twenty seven years in photography and have lived through nine business relocations.
00:00:19 [Alison]
We’ve coached each other through all of this privately on Marco Polo, and now we’re bringing our polos public.
00:00:24 [Alison]
On this podcast, we’ll give you actionable steps to help you keep it moving.
00:00:33 [Alison]
Hey.
00:00:33 [Alison]
Thanks for coming back.
00:00:34 [Alison]
On this episode of keep it moving, we are going to be doing a regular check-in on Melissa and I’s photography businesses.
00:00:42 [Alison]
So in the summer of twenty twenty three, Melissa and I each moved our businesses.
00:00:46 [Alison]
Melissa went from South Florida all the way up to Charlottesville, Virginia, and Allison might move from Virginia Beach to Oahu, Hawaii.
00:00:55 [Alison]
We’re checking in.
00:00:56 [Alison]
We’re gonna see what we’ve been doing, how’s it going, and the status of all the little in betweens.
00:01:01 [Alison]
So, Melissa, how’s it going?
00:01:04 [Melissa]
It it’s going.
00:01:07 [Melissa]
It’s been going pretty good.
00:01:08 [Melissa]
I mean, it’s been we moved in June 2023, but that was, like, the physical move.
00:01:14 [Melissa]
That was, like, moving trucks showing up, all of that kind of stuff.
00:01:17 [Melissa]
But that’s not when I started the move.
00:01:20 [Melissa]
I actually started prepping for the move as soon as my husband was told, hey.
00:01:23 [Melissa]
You’ve been accepted for the job in Charlottesville.
00:01:26 [Melissa]
And that was back in February.
00:01:27 [Melissa]
So it’s been almost a year, since in my mind, we really started prepping for that move and making the changes.
00:01:34 [Melissa]
And once we knew a location, then we were able to, like, get started on everything.
00:01:39 [Melissa]
So so I do feel like it’s been it’s been a year.
00:01:42 [Melissa]
And, and that’s when
00:01:44 [Alison]
your mind that y’all were moving, but you didn’t know where for even before that.
00:01:48 [Alison]
Right?
00:01:50 [Melissa]
Yes.
00:01:50 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:01:50 [Melissa]
Because everybody knows this.
00:01:52 [Melissa]
I didn’t love South Florida.
00:01:53 [Melissa]
I’m not a summer all year kinda girl.
00:01:55 [Melissa]
Pretty much we landed.
00:01:57 [Melissa]
We hit that first fall, and, like, it wasn’t actually fall, and I was like, oh my lord.
00:02:01 [Melissa]
Where am I?
00:02:04 [Melissa]
So, yeah, we had been we knew we were gonna be moving, probably since the November before the actual finding out, and we were looking at different locations.
00:02:13 [Melissa]
So one option was, like, Charlotte, North Carolina.
00:02:15 [Melissa]
Another was Raleigh.
00:02:16 [Melissa]
And then we knew we weren’t going back to Northern Virginia, and so then Charlottesville is kinda where we landed because we wanna be close to the water and everything.
00:02:23 [Melissa]
So I had already done a little bit of research.
00:02:25 [Melissa]
So that’s a great thing if you know your and you can do some research ahead of time to kinda, like, see what is the photography community like there and stuff.
00:02:33 [Melissa]
And then if you’re able to weigh in on, like, hey.
00:02:35 [Melissa]
This would be the better spot for us, then that that locks out.
00:02:38 [Melissa]
You know?
00:02:38 [Melissa]
Allison doesn’t get that choice.
00:02:39 [Melissa]
She just I
00:02:40 [Alison]
don’t get options.
00:02:41 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:02:41 [Melissa]
Sure options.
00:02:42 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:02:43 [Melissa]
Marine Corps, where are we going?
00:02:44 [Melissa]
Right.
00:02:45 [Melissa]
But yeah.
00:02:46 [Melissa]
So when we when we left South Florida or e actually, I forget when we left.
00:02:50 [Melissa]
Like I said, February is kinda where I start in my head of the business started moving.
00:02:55 [Melissa]
And I was page one, top top one, two, or three kinda thing.
00:03:00 [Melissa]
I was page one, number one for my main keyword, and then I would fluctuate in, like, spots two or three for the other keywords.
00:03:06 [Melissa]
But my main keyword was for newborn photography.
00:03:09 [Melissa]
And so that was, like, really hard to rip the Band Aid off, but I went ahead and did my keyword research and changed everything over last February.
00:03:17 [Melissa]
And you have to remember, I’ve had my website for a long time, long time.
00:03:20 [Melissa]
I’ve done a lot of work on my SEO.
00:03:23 [Melissa]
I know what I need to do to make all these changes.
00:03:27 [Melissa]
So when I changed my keywords, within two weeks, I was ranking, like, page two for my new keywords, and that was just literally, like, you know, updating things.
00:03:37 [Alison]
That’s everything.
00:03:38 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:03:39 [Melissa]
So, I mean, I hit page two right off, and, like, that’s kind of then where the work really starts.
00:03:42 [Melissa]
It’s like, okay.
00:03:43 [Melissa]
I’ve let Google know I’m moving, but then the rest of my website still is, like, screaming South Florida and stuff.
00:03:48 [Melissa]
And I would say I actually just checked it, I think, last week on SEO Edge, and I am in the number one spot for kinda my second keyword main keyword here.
00:04:01 [Melissa]
My like, I’m targeting Charlottesville and Richmond.
00:04:03 [Melissa]
So I hit page one, spots one, I think, two, and three for the different ones, but for my main keyword, like, spot one here.
00:04:10 [Melissa]
And then I’m also targeting Richmond.
00:04:12 [Melissa]
I’m, like, middle of the page.
00:04:13 [Melissa]
So I need to do some more work on Richmond to get that that bumped up.
00:04:17 [Melissa]
But I’ve definitely seen, like, I’ve gotten some inquiries in.
00:04:19 [Melissa]
I have a session tomorrow.
00:04:21 [Melissa]
So that’s good.
00:04:22 [Melissa]
You know?
00:04:22 [Melissa]
It it here’s the thing with it.
00:04:24 [Melissa]
You know?
00:04:25 [Melissa]
The earlier you can get started, the better because it just takes time.
00:04:27 [Melissa]
I mean, Allison and I both know this.
00:04:29 [Melissa]
It takes a lot of time.
00:04:30 [Melissa]
And what we have also learned most recently is that, like, my old location, I’m still getting inquiries every week for South Florida and sometimes multiple inquiries in a week.
00:04:41 [Melissa]
And I have a list of photographers.
00:04:43 [Melissa]
Here you go.
00:04:44 [Melissa]
I’m no longer there.
00:04:45 [Melissa]
Go contact one of these guys.
00:04:47 [Melissa]
And so it’s frustrating because it’s like, ugh.
00:04:49 [Melissa]
You know?
00:04:50 [Melissa]
I Yeah.
00:04:51 [Melissa]
I I would like to have more inquiries for here if at all possible.
00:04:54 [Melissa]
But yeah.
00:04:54 [Melissa]
So I could’ve I would say if you know you’re gonna be moving, like, you could switch your SEO, like, way, way sooner because
00:05:01 [Alison]
did you do what did you do to switch your SEO that got you at page two right off the bat?
00:05:05 [Melissa]
Just I did my keyword research, and I figured out what keywords I needed to target.
00:05:09 [Melissa]
And then I went ahead and implemented those keywords on my website on the various pages and made sure everything was set up for that kind of thing.
00:05:15 [Melissa]
It wasn’t really even until recently that I actually went back and changed out the images more.
00:05:19 [Melissa]
I mean, I updated the alt text and stuff, but I went back recently and actually pulled new images, renamed them with the keyword for that page, and then updated those.
00:05:29 [Melissa]
I’ve been working on blogging, so that was kind of the thing.
00:05:31 [Melissa]
Like, just changing the keywords over for me made a big difference in okay.
00:05:36 [Melissa]
Now at that time, honestly, not only was I ranking for South Florida, I was also ranking for Charlottesville and Richmond with the same exact page.
00:05:43 [Melissa]
And in fact, I think I Googled, like, my empire for the other day, and I was in, like, spot 11, and it says Charlottesville photographer.
00:05:51 [Melissa]
So Wow.
00:05:52 [Melissa]
I was like, well, okay.
00:05:54 [Melissa]
And that’s what kinda told me that, like, I could’ve started way earlier and then just rid like, it took a while for my rankings to drop drop in the old location, and a lot of my blog posts are still ranking number one.
00:06:04 [Melissa]
You know?
00:06:04 [Melissa]
And so it’s like, okay.
00:06:06 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:06:06 [Melissa]
Like, it’s it’s hilarious on that one, and they’re South Florida specific.
00:06:10 [Melissa]
So
00:06:10 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:06:11 [Alison]
That’s what happens when you when you do things effectively.
00:06:15 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:06:15 [Melissa]
And so now I’m working on that here.
00:06:17 [Melissa]
Like, now we’re working on blog posts for here.
00:06:20 [Melissa]
Same same type of blog post I did in South Florida.
00:06:23 [Melissa]
I’m just basically rinsing and repeating here.
00:06:25 [Melissa]
So the information’s different.
00:06:26 [Melissa]
The keywords are different, but the topics are still the same.
00:06:29 [Melissa]
And so that’s just finding time to do that is a little harder.
00:06:34 [Melissa]
I had more time in when we first landed in South Florida for all those kind of things, and I don’t have as much time now because I’m running two businesses.
00:06:41 [Melissa]
So, but, you know, it’s still going and everything.
00:06:45 [Melissa]
So yeah.
00:06:45 [Melissa]
And then as far as, like, I’m not so great on on new locations here because I’m not really trying to do families as much.
00:06:53 [Melissa]
I would really like to stick with lifestyle newborn.
00:06:56 [Melissa]
And so, you know, I’m booking some sessions, and clients are finding me on Google.
00:07:00 [Melissa]
You know, that’s where I’m seeing where people are saying, oh, we saw you on Google.
00:07:03 [Melissa]
We saw you on Google.
00:07:03 [Melissa]
So yeah.
00:07:04 [Melissa]
So that’s what’s going on with me.
00:07:05 [Melissa]
It’s still gonna take time.
00:07:07 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:07:08 [Alison]
That’s awesome.
00:07:08 [Alison]
And it’s so nice that you have two businesses to run to help fill that void and that gap in the interim because Yeah.
00:07:14 [Alison]
It’s very much a gap.
00:07:17 [Alison]
So what’s going on with your business?
00:07:20 [Alison]
Okay.
00:07:20 [Alison]
So my seventh move, we knew we were leaving Virginia Beach, you know, eighteen months ago.
00:07:28 [Alison]
We saw the writing on the wall.
00:07:29 [Alison]
We knew we were up for orders and that we were gonna be heading out.
00:07:31 [Alison]
We just didn’t know where or when.
00:07:33 [Alison]
And then our story kinda goes, I Colin called me from from California, and somebody had told him to think about Hawaii, which was not on our radar at all.
00:07:45 [Alison]
And so I just called my mom crying from Target, honestly.
00:07:48 [Alison]
But then I got used to the idea.
00:07:49 [Alison]
So but we actually didn’t have orders until January.
00:07:52 [Alison]
It was really late last year.
00:07:54 [Alison]
It was we should have had orders closer before Christmas or around Thanksgiving.
00:07:58 [Alison]
And so we knew we were penciled in, but marine corps is marine corps.
00:08:01 [Alison]
And so I did I started doing some research about locations and places and most schools.
00:08:06 [Alison]
Like, can we really make this happen for our family?
00:08:08 [Alison]
But we didn’t have orders until January time frame.
00:08:12 [Alison]
And then, of course, as soon as we have location, that’s when the real work starts.
00:08:15 [Alison]
And that’s when I started doing location scouting, kind of competitor competitor research analysis, like, what’s the market like out here?
00:08:22 [Alison]
Who’s doing what?
00:08:23 [Alison]
It’s Hawaii.
00:08:24 [Alison]
Like, surely, there’s tons of photographers, and there are.
00:08:27 [Alison]
But what what’s what’s the content like?
00:08:29 [Alison]
What are what’s the landscape like as far as, like, price points, styles, and genres, and all that stuff?
00:08:36 [Alison]
And so that was January.
00:08:40 [Alison]
I got to do a kind of a new location, like, trip.
00:08:45 [Alison]
We got to come out before we actually moved, which I’d never ever done before, but highly recommend.
00:08:49 [Alison]
So we came out in March for a week.
00:08:51 [Alison]
I was able to tag along on one of Colin’s conferences and get some content.
00:08:56 [Alison]
But I was still trying to this this was a really weird move
00:09:02 [Alison]
for me because I was trying
00:09:02 [Alison]
to operate two locations at the same time.
00:09:05 [Alison]
So I know I was moving in the summer of twenty three.
00:09:08 [Alison]
I was I had some associates that were gonna continue to shoot for me, and so I did not wanna pull the plug on that stuff as soon as I knew and and as soon as we got orders.
00:09:16 [Alison]
I wanted that juice to run through.
00:09:18 [Alison]
I wanted to maximize the busy season in Virginia because I knew there was gonna be nothing in Hawaii until I was established.
00:09:25 [Alison]
And so I was really operating two functionally two businesses in two places for six, seven, eight months.
00:09:33 [Alison]
And it was really mind blowing.
00:09:36 [Alison]
It was really just it took a lot of money, honestly.
00:09:38 [Alison]
But I just got I just started putting my head down and researching researching what are the permitting rules at every level.
00:09:45 [Alison]
And when we say every level, we’re talking county, city, state, sometimes federal.
00:10:50 [Alison]
And then multiple state state agencies.
00:10:52 [Alison]
So one thing I didn’t realize until recently is that there’s a permitting process here for Hawaii of from the land Department of Land and Natural Resources, not the Hawaii Film Office.
00:11:01 [Alison]
So there was that researching what were the park rules, the state rules, kind of getting into the nitty gritty of what’s pretty.
00:11:08 [Alison]
Where where do people shoot?
00:11:09 [Alison]
You know?
00:11:09 [Alison]
Just Google.
00:11:10 [Alison]
Where to do family photos in Hawaii?
00:11:12 [Alison]
That kind of stuff.
00:11:13 [Alison]
And trying and prepping for that first kind of scouting trip.
00:11:17 [Alison]
So I was writing all of these blog posts, doing all of this research in order to really get that SEO head start to bake in knowing that I wasn’t going to be there for six months, and it would take at least twelve to eighteen months for all of this stuff to really take off.
00:11:32 [Alison]
But the biggest thing I did was the mini sessions during that during that scouting trip and using the content off of that.
00:11:39 [Alison]
And so what I did actually is I targeted a keyword, a lot of search volume, but I knew was not like, was less than ideal.
00:11:46 [Alison]
So it was, like, Oahu photographer mini session.
00:11:51 [Alison]
And it blew up before I even got to, before we even got to Hawaii.
00:11:56 [Alison]
So it is still kind of going off off the charts.
00:12:00 [Alison]
I’m getting a lot of inquiries for it.
00:12:02 [Alison]
And because of it, lots of people coming to my website, getting on my wait list and whatnot.
00:12:06 [Alison]
It’s a lot of phone calls.
00:12:07 [Alison]
Not a whole not as many bookings as I was like, just just because I know it’s not like it’s a wide net, right, when I’m going a little deeper, looking for, you know, my ideal clients a little a little different than just a mini session.
00:12:17 [Alison]
So how’s it going now?
00:12:18 [Alison]
So that was a lot of stuff that, you know, I did to prep, but that blog post is still is still getting me lots of inquiries.
00:12:27 [Alison]
Still have lots of inquiries off of it.
00:12:29 [Alison]
SEO, I am happy to say I just checked yesterday on SEO Edge, and I am solidly in the top 20 for all of my my target keywords, which is very different than other duty stations that we’ve had.
00:12:41 [Alison]
In Virginia Beach, I was very easily, like, one or two for my target behind big, like, pure space in, was it Thumbtack, that one?
00:12:50 [Alison]
So, you know, those have a lot of links and domain authority.
00:12:55 [Alison]
So one thing I’ve learned a lot with this one, this move, is that every every location is different based on the search volume for that place.
00:13:04 [Alison]
So there is a ton of volume for photographers here in Oahu in Hawaii.
00:13:09 [Alison]
There are tons of people that are photographers, and so it is just a much more competitive market to get, the ranks in Google.
00:13:17 [Alison]
So January ’24, I started blogging several times a week in the late winter, early spring of of twenty twenty three, and I am just now at sitting at the thirteen, fifteen, and 17 points for different target keywords.
00:13:34 [Alison]
So that’s it’s a lot of work.
00:13:36 [Alison]
It’s and we’re talking, like, blogging three to four times a week about location specific things.
00:13:43 [Alison]
So my clients are coming from Google.
00:13:44 [Alison]
I’m getting a few on Instagram here recently, but by and large, my organic like, it’s probably four times greater than my organic social traffic according to Google Analytics.
00:13:55 [Alison]
And in my booking sessions, yes.
00:13:56 [Alison]
I’ve been booking bunches of sessions.
00:13:58 [Alison]
I’ve had sessions multiple sessions a month.
00:14:00 [Alison]
Of course, it ebbs and flows.
00:14:01 [Alison]
Right now, we’re kind of in the kind of a lull period for tourism in general in January and February.
00:14:07 [Alison]
It kind of mimics the the school season and holiday season, so lots of people were coming between around Thanksgiving.
00:14:13 [Alison]
Tons of people tons and tons of inquiries for the last two weeks of December into New Year’s.
00:14:17 [Alison]
And now people are back in school.
00:14:19 [Alison]
Colleges are back in session.
00:14:21 [Alison]
There are people coming, but it’s a lot fewer, and it’ll stay that way until spring break picks up.
00:14:26 [Alison]
I’ll have a lot of inquiries already for March and April time frame and then a few for May and June already.
00:14:31 [Alison]
And then when did I drop my old location?
00:14:33 [Alison]
This is a fun story.
00:14:35 [Alison]
I dropped my old keywords for Virginia Beach in May or it was May or June.
00:14:42 [Alison]
And, again, I held on to it because I was intentionally trying to to garner some more clientele for after my move for some associates.
00:14:50 [Alison]
And I am, as of yesterday as of today, actually, still ranked number 11 for my target keyword in Virginia Beach, which is blowing my mind.
00:14:58 [Alison]
Here we are eight months, nine months after the initial pivot, and I’m still, like, just barely outside of the top 10.
00:15:06 [Alison]
That blows my mind.
00:15:07 [Alison]
I’ve never done that before.
00:15:08 [Alison]
That’s never happened.
00:15:09 [Alison]
But, again, it has to do with, your competitiveness and the quality of your blogging for your talent.
00:15:15 [Alison]
So I I had a blog post that I actually wrote a couple years ago.
00:15:19 [Alison]
Got a little upside website, refresh and update, and that blog post for where to eat with kids in Virginia Beach is dominating.
00:15:28 [Alison]
Absolutely dominating.
00:15:29 [Alison]
So even though it’s no longer relevant to my to my demographic, I still have that post live for the clicks, the whole domain and the authority for it.
00:15:36 [Alison]
So is that a good thing?
00:15:39 [Alison]
That’s a good thing.
00:15:39 [Alison]
Right, Melissa?
00:15:41 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:15:41 [Melissa]
I mean, anytime you’re getting traffic and clicks, as long as it’s not, you know, detrimental to if all of your posts were all Virginia Beach and they were the only ones doing well and your Oahu ones weren’t doing well, then Google’s gonna be like, well, wait a second.
00:15:54 [Melissa]
You know?
00:15:55 [Melissa]
Everything that’s doing well is Virginia Beach.
00:15:57 [Melissa]
So just I would definitely, look at can you write that post for Oahu also if you like?
00:16:03 [Melissa]
Because the good thing for you is that, you know, you kinda have the same clients’ vacationers.
00:16:07 [Melissa]
So Right.
00:16:08 [Melissa]
You know, your mindset and that’s where I talk a lot to people about you really have to think about your ideal client when you’re blogging on that kind of thing because the stuff that takes off needs to be for your ideal client.
00:16:18 [Melissa]
So for you, it’s people traveling.
00:16:20 [Melissa]
So writing that post for Oahu may get you the same same results.
00:16:24 [Melissa]
You just have to do it for that new location.
00:16:27 [Alison]
And so here’s the interesting thing.
00:16:28 [Alison]
It’s funny you say that because I did.
00:16:29 [Alison]
That was one of the first things
00:16:30 [Melissa]
I did.
00:16:31 [Alison]
I did it before we even moved here, but it has not taken off.
00:16:35 [Alison]
And I and there’s kind of a a weird dynamic with place too.
00:16:38 [Alison]
You know, Virginia Beach has a lot of uppity restaurants.
00:16:40 [Alison]
It has a lot of nicer restaurants and just, but there’s also some really great family friendly restaurants with arcades and play spaces outdoors.
00:16:48 [Alison]
And that’s what I was highlighting with that.
00:16:49 [Alison]
But here in Hawaii, it’s kinda hard to find a place that’s not kid friendly.
00:16:53 [Alison]
And space is such a premium, there isn’t a brewery with sprawling fields or playgrounds, because it we’re on a tight island.
00:17:02 [Alison]
So it’s hard to find a place with a playground.
00:17:04 [Alison]
There is one place that I know of with a green space outdoors that’s relatively so that, like, a preschooler could walk around.
00:17:12 [Alison]
And so it’s it’s a different dynamic and it’s a different like, everything about it’s different.
00:17:17 [Alison]
You know, it’s hard to find a place that’s not good for kids or family friendly because it’s Hawaii.
00:17:22 [Alison]
So I don’t know that people are looking for it as much.
00:17:24 [Alison]
Now there are people who are definitely looking for where to eat in Waikiki and how to eat cheap, and I have some of that stuff, but it’s not it’s not performing as well as that one.
00:17:33 [Alison]
But, also, it’s only been, like, six months, not two and a half years.
00:17:37 [Melissa]
So That was the other thing I was gonna say is how long has it been and stuff.
00:17:40 [Melissa]
Because somebody definitely plays in on that kind of thing.
00:17:43 [Melissa]
The longer it’s sitting out there, the more it bakes.
00:17:45 [Melissa]
You know?
00:17:47 [Melissa]
So I would probably give it, you know, give it some more time and see see where that that takes off.
00:17:52 [Alison]
Absolutely.
00:17:53 [Alison]
And now that we know and we’re military, and I know here in Oahu, I don’t expect this is not hard hard and fast, but I don’t expect that we’re gonna be be here past 2025, the summer of twenty twenty five.
00:18:08 [Alison]
So my blogging game has really shifted, and it’s a really hard shift.
00:18:12 [Alison]
I have been so entrenched in blogging specifically for location about, like, where to eat with kids, where to go for ice cream, best places for happy hour, that kind of stuff, that I really have a hard time getting out of that mentality and blogging specifically for my long game, things that are going to supersede where I’m at and serve my business and serve my website.
00:18:36 [Alison]
Photography, whether it’s photography or what to wear or how to prep the session or prints and albums and and download guides, at the time adjusting and thinking long term.
00:18:47 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:18:47 [Melissa]
And that’s what’s really hard too.
00:18:48 [Melissa]
A lot of people are still trying to understand, okay.
00:18:51 [Melissa]
Well, if I’m blogging, I have to be blogging for a keyword, and it has to be local and stuff like that.
00:18:56 [Melissa]
No.
00:18:56 [Melissa]
Like, the post you’re talking about, these long game posts about prints and albums and wall art, they still establish your authority as a photographer and in the photography industry.
00:19:03 [Melissa]
They may not be a local location specific post, but that’s fine.
00:19:07 [Melissa]
They they’re gonna serve you, and they may serve you on bigger keywords and stuff that aren’t location specific.
00:19:13 [Melissa]
And if anything, you know, these are you’ll always those posts as being, like, good for clients.
00:19:17 [Melissa]
So you write a post on, like, wall art or albums, you can now send that to inquiries and stuff.
00:19:22 [Melissa]
You can send that out in email newsletters, that kind of thing.
00:19:25 [Melissa]
And so you can make that post work for you in other ways.
00:19:29 [Alison]
That’s a good point.
00:19:30 [Alison]
Such a good point.
00:19:31 [Alison]
And that’s a wrap on this episode.
00:19:33 [Alison]
I hope you found it helpful, and we will give you another update in the next three to six months.
