Are you tired of posting beautiful photos on Instagram only to hear crickets when it comes to actual client inquiries? You’re not alone. Many photographers struggle with Instagram strategy for photographers that actually converts followers into paying clients.
As photographers ourselves, we’ve discovered that Instagram success isn’t just about pretty pictures—it’s about strategic profile optimization and consistent engagement that builds trust with your ideal clients. After years of trial and error (and countless Marco Polo conversations between the two of us!), we’ve cracked the code on Instagram marketing that actually works for photography businesses.
But before we dive in—Hi! I’m Melissa, and I’m an SEO expert here to help portrait photographers finally get found by their dream clients on Google—without the technical overwhelm. Whether you need done-for-you SEO services, step-by-step coaching through my proven system, or monthly blogging strategies (like my Blogging Club membership!), I’ve got the tools to transform your invisible website into a client-attracting machine. Ready to stop being the best-kept secret in your market?
If you haven’t already, I’d encourage you to listen to the full podcast episode where Alison & I break down all these strategies in detail. But if you’re ready to get straight to the actionable stuff, this blog post lays it all out for you step-by-step. Either way, you’re going to walk away with concrete strategies you can implement right away.
Think of your Instagram profile as a billboard for your photography business. Your grid is like looking through your store window—what do you offer? Who are you? What makes you different?
And here’s something crucial: your Instagram Stories (that little circle around your profile picture) are your “open hours.” When you have an active story, it signals you’re open for business. No stories? It looks like you’re closed.
Here’s what most photographers don’t realize: your name and handle are the ONLY searchable fields on Instagram. Your bio, captions, and links aren’t searchable at all.
What to include in your name field:
Example: “Allison • Oahu Family Photographer”
For your handle, include your name and something indicating you’re a photographer. This helps with searchability and immediately tells people what you do.
Your bio should accomplish three things:
Instead of generic photographer descriptions, try something like:
You get one link in Instagram, and here’s why you shouldn’t waste it on Linktree or similar services: every click to an external link tool is traffic you’re NOT sending to your website.
Instead, create a dedicated links page on your own website. This:
Important: Make sure to index this page in Google Search Console—don’t make the mistake of leaving it on “no index”!
Start with 5 strategic highlight categories (what we call the “JK Five” approach):
This removes decision fatigue and ensures every story you save serves a strategic purpose.
Your face needs to appear within the first 9 posts on your grid—this is prime real estate that visitors see immediately.
Consider using a pattern approach:
This stripe pattern creates visual consistency while ensuring variety in your content.
They’ll still appear in your Reels section without disrupting your main grid pattern.
For photographers who struggle with what to post, try the “Fast, Fun, Done” approach:
This framework ensures every post serves a purpose and fits your brand message.
You can pin up to 3 posts or Reels at the top of your profile. Use these strategically for:
Think of pinned content as your elevator pitch in visual form.
Instagram’s goal is engagement, so align your strategy with theirs. Spend time daily in:
Leave the type of comments and engagement you want to receive. The law of reciprocity works powerfully on social media.
When you know you’re going to be featured (podcast, blog, collaboration), prepare your Instagram strategically:
The key to Instagram success for photographers isn’t posting more—it’s posting strategically. Focus on these fundamentals:
Remember, social media should be social. If you’re not having fun with it, your audience won’t either. Find the balance between strategy and authenticity, and watch as your Instagram becomes a powerful tool for booking dream clients.
