Quarterly check ins are a inside look on how Alison & Melissa’s photography businesses are going. Alison moved from Virignia to Hawaii just one year ago and Melissa moved from Miami to Virginia at the same time.
On this episode, we review our summer plans and reality. What did we expect from the summer months and what actually happened? (hint: they were very different for both of us!)

00:02:06 [Alison]

00:02:08 [Melissa]
Alright, guys.
00:02:08 [Melissa]
We are coming back from summer.
00:02:11 [Melissa]
I am on week four of battling COVID.
00:02:13 [Melissa]
So if my voice sounds funky or I happen to cough, which I apologize to our editor if I do, that is why.
00:02:19 [Melissa]
I’m down to maybe a couple tissues an hour versus y’all.
00:02:23 [Melissa]
At one point, I did the math, and I think in one weekend, I blew my nose, like, a thousand times.
00:02:26 [Melissa]
So Better.
00:02:27 [Alison]
Ugh.
00:02:27 [Melissa]
But we’re getting there.
00:02:28 [Melissa]
But, yeah, I’m excited to talk about, like, a quarter.
00:02:30 [Melissa]
Allison and I, obviously, we polo each other in the summer and stuff of what’s going on, but it feels like it’s been forever since I’ve talked to you.
00:02:37 [Alison]
I feel very out of practice here.
00:02:38 [Alison]
So yeah.
00:02:39 [Alison]
So how was the summer for you?
00:02:40 [Alison]
Too quick.
00:02:41 [Alison]
Amen.
00:02:42 [Alison]
Too quick.
00:02:43 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:02:43 [Melissa]
We’ll dive a bit more into that and stuff.
00:02:45 [Melissa]
But yeah, I blinked and it was over and I was like, what just happened?
00:02:50 [Melissa]
But let’s start with our first two quarters, just a quick touch base.
00:02:53 [Melissa]
So first two quarters of the year, you were really busy because you had a lot of that seasonal vacation clients in Hawaii, right?
00:03:00 [Alison]
So that was the second quarter.
00:03:01 [Alison]
The first quarter was more about still coming in, like, what we’re post holidays, so it was a little bit slow.
00:03:06 [Alison]
What do I expect?
00:03:07 [Alison]
Still trying to feel out the place.
00:03:08 [Alison]
We slowed the first January, February, March, but it did inquiries blew up February into March with the spring break, season.
00:03:16 [Alison]
And so March and April were booked solid for me for the first time ever that long.
00:03:22 [Alison]
So that was really good.
00:03:23 [Alison]
And then we had emergency travel in quarter two, which was not planned, of course.
00:03:28 [Alison]
And so, yeah, it really mellowed out a little bit, but stayed steady nice and steady.
00:03:31 [Alison]
Average sales, everything went up.
00:03:33 [Alison]
It was fantastic.
00:03:35 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:03:35 [Melissa]
And for me one of the big things for me is, like, figuring out how to balance having an education side of my business and side of my business.
00:03:41 [Melissa]
And I don’t know, guys.
00:03:42 [Melissa]
I’ve always heard from people that, like, oh, they do education, but they don’t shoot anymore.
00:03:46 [Melissa]
And there’s such, like, a stigma with it.
00:03:48 [Melissa]
And I’m just gonna come right and tell you guys, I do shoot, but I shoot about 25% for my business, and then SEO is about 75%.
00:03:56 [Melissa]
Actually, up until this summer, but we’ll get into that in a little bit.
00:03:59 [Melissa]
But so the first two quarters, I didn’t really have a lot of photography clients, which was okay, but we were slammed with SEO clients.
00:04:06 [Melissa]
It was just busy with done for you clients and group coaching, and then I was launching the blogging club right before summer.
00:04:12 [Melissa]
In retrospect, may not have been the best time to launch as I learned later on in the summer.
00:04:16 [Melissa]
But yeah.
00:04:17 [Melissa]
So we were really busy with SEO stuff.
00:04:18 [Melissa]
And then it was, I think, May.
00:04:20 [Melissa]
I booked, like, four membership clients.
00:04:22 [Melissa]
And so a membership client for me, they get up to four sessions, but it’s gonna be maternity and newborn, which you guys all know can be, like, eight weeks apart at the most.
00:04:30 [Melissa]
Maybe it’s six weeks apart.
00:04:31 [Melissa]
So, like, all of a sudden, I knew I had eight sessions that were gonna happen in the next three months, which is fabulous because I really only wanna shoot three or four sessions a month.
00:04:40 [Melissa]
Like, I only want one a week at the most.
00:04:42 [Melissa]
So that was really great.
00:04:43 [Melissa]
I noticed too, I was looking at my stats.
00:04:45 [Melissa]
Y’all, 25% of my inquiries this year have been Florida.
00:04:49 [Melissa]
So even where I’m like, yeah, you’re out a few years.
00:04:52 [Melissa]
It’s a year.
00:04:53 [Melissa]
It’s a year since we moved, and 25% of my inquiries this year have been Florida so that I’m unavailable for.
00:04:58 [Melissa]
So I’m still and it’s one of those I’m picking up some stuff here in Charlottesville and stuff like that.
00:05:02 [Melissa]
Like, now I’m number one for Charlottesville newborn and stuff, but it’s a slower it’s a smaller area.
00:05:07 [Melissa]
I was in Miami before.
00:05:08 [Melissa]
That’s huge.
00:05:09 [Melissa]
So it’s just a dramatic decrease in the amount of people.
00:05:12 [Melissa]
But that was a little sad.
00:05:13 [Melissa]
Not that I didn’t wanna leave Florida, but
00:05:15 [Alison]
That’s the feeling I have every move is from steady and predictable income to cricket.
00:05:22 [Alison]
That’s the that’s where my frustration and motivation come from.
00:05:25 [Alison]
Hey.
00:05:26 [Alison]
Yes.
00:05:26 [Alison]
I’m talking to you.
00:05:28 [Alison]
How are you feeling about this move?
00:05:30 [Alison]
It’s a lot to process, but I’ve got something for you.
00:05:33 [Alison]
I want you to grab my pre move checklist to make things a little easier.
00:05:37 [Alison]
Even if you’re not sure where you’re going yet, it’s not too early to start.
00:05:40 [Alison]
But you could be losing time on that SEO juice if you dilly dally.
00:05:44 [Alison]
So head over to alisonbell.co, that’s with 1l,bell,.co, to get your pre move checklist.
00:05:51 [Alison]
You got this.
00:05:52 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:05:52 [Melissa]
And so that’s the thing.
00:05:54 [Melissa]
Like I said, I got those four membership clients, so that was really awesome.
00:05:58 [Melissa]
And and that kinda sets me up because I had all these sessions this summer, which I’m actually finishing them out, I think, in the next three weeks or so.
00:06:06 [Melissa]
And then it’ll be in another six months or so, I’ll be able to try and get them all in for six month sessions and things.
00:06:11 [Melissa]
And then next year, I know I’ll have at least four one year sessions.
00:06:15 [Melissa]
So that’s awesome.
00:06:16 [Melissa]
I’m just gonna plan ahead of time.
00:06:18 [Alison]
That’s crazy.
00:06:18 [Alison]
And this is a keen example of I never have, I shouldn’t say never.
00:06:22 [Alison]
I have had a handful of repeat clients that I’ve had shot every year for four years or so.
00:06:27 [Alison]
But that is so weird to me.
00:06:29 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:06:30 [Alison]
So weird to me.
00:06:30 [Melissa]
But that’s But to me now, you’re in a destination place, so Yeah.
00:06:34 [Alison]
Even Virginia Beach was
00:06:35 [Melissa]
a destination place
00:06:36 [Alison]
that I didn’t expect, but I love it.
00:06:39 [Alison]
I love it.
00:06:39 [Alison]
I don’t know.
00:06:40 [Alison]
I just feel like there’s less pressure for me to perform when
00:06:42 [Melissa]
it’s Mhmm.
00:06:43 [Alison]
The first time every time.
00:06:44 [Alison]
Like, I feel the pressure to, like, reinvent the wheel when it’s really not necessary.
00:06:49 [Alison]
I have repeat clients.
00:06:50 [Alison]
Like, hey, you played ring around the rooster with me, like, six times.
00:06:53 [Alison]
Like Yeah.
00:06:53 [Melissa]
But I think for I look at it this way.
00:06:55 [Melissa]
Like, sometimes they want to do that again, and they just wanna and they wanna pair it with the photo when they did it three years ago and show how big the kids are now.
00:07:02 [Alison]
So the personalities change.
00:07:03 [Alison]
And that’s really, like, one thing some people do feel that pressure to recreate the wheel, and you don’t with every family because everybody is going to bring their own approach to it.
00:07:12 [Melissa]
And not to mention quite so fun.
00:07:13 [Melissa]
They’ll look at your website.
00:07:14 [Melissa]
They see what’s in your portfolio.
00:07:16 [Melissa]
If every time you shoot, you pick all different poses and all different stuff, they’re like, but I really wanted that, like, that was there that you did this.
00:07:23 [Melissa]
I can’t tell you.
00:07:23 [Melissa]
I remember a long time ago, I did an engagement session where I had the groom, firemans carry the bride.
00:07:29 [Melissa]
Let me tell you something.
00:07:31 [Melissa]
I had to do that same pose for the next four years with every engagement session because those girls were like, I want the fireman Carrie.
00:07:38 [Melissa]
And I’m like, okay.
00:07:39 [Alison]
The and they did it.
00:07:40 [Alison]
If I didn’t get the Mads Very good point.
00:07:43 [Alison]
Very good point.
00:07:43 [Melissa]
Very good point.
00:07:44 [Melissa]
Yes, ma’am.
00:07:44 [Melissa]
I will take care of that for you.
00:07:46 [Alison]
That’s awesome.
00:07:47 [Alison]
Alright.
00:07:47 [Alison]
So what did we expect for the summer?
00:07:49 [Alison]
This is good therapy for me because summer did not I expected it to at all.
00:07:54 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:07:54 [Alison]
I definitely was looking forward to I feel like it snuck up on me.
00:07:57 [Alison]
My kids got out May 17, which is pretty early.
00:07:59 [Alison]
I had a really long summer.
00:08:01 [Melissa]
Mine were out like May 21.
00:08:02 [Melissa]
It was insanely early.
00:08:04 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:08:04 [Alison]
And so it snuck up.
00:08:05 [Alison]
I was prepping it three, four weeks out going, okay, this is coming and watching this like dreaded deadline approach, right?
00:08:11 [Alison]
While I’m trying to like flail and keep my arms afloat, but also prep knowing that I wasn’t gonna be blogging.
00:08:17 [Alison]
I wasn’t gonna be, you know, doing my normal thing.
00:08:20 [Alison]
But I did expect, okay, let’s take a week of chill.
00:08:22 [Alison]
Kids are gonna be home, focus on fun.
00:08:24 [Alison]
And then I did expect some sort of like balance or predictability or some sort of schedule while the kids were home.
00:08:32 [Alison]
It never came.
00:08:33 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:08:34 [Alison]
It never came.
00:08:34 [Alison]
And not having to do carpool, I was like, oh, I could do three sessions a week because I don’t have to worry about getting anybody anywhere.
00:08:41 [Alison]
And they’re really early and it’s before the kids even get up.
00:08:43 [Alison]
And one of them, they’re old enough to stay home anyway.
00:08:45 [Alison]
And so I was like, I’m at the floor.
00:08:47 [Melissa]
Of older children.
00:08:48 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:08:48 [Alison]
I’m gonna go for it.
00:08:50 [Alison]
And there was a two week period two or three week period in June where I had three sessions a week, and I could not keep up.
00:08:57 [Alison]
And it just but necessity begets, like, creativity.
00:09:01 [Alison]
Right?
00:09:02 [Alison]
I I knew I couldn’t keep up.
00:09:03 [Alison]
I didn’t wanna spend time in the editing and calling.
00:09:05 [Alison]
I had already lined up editors, and so I went full into leaning onto some new things that we’ll talk about in a little bit.
00:09:11 [Alison]
And it was a life saving.
00:09:12 [Alison]
It was absolutely life saving.
00:09:14 [Alison]
But I did realize during that time or towards the end of the summer, this summer was extra chaotic compared to other summers because my kids are different.
00:09:23 [Alison]
Back when they were little, everybody had some autonomy within my set regimen, my schedule.
00:09:29 [Alison]
Hey, we’re gonna get up and we’re gonna do this today or we’re gonna have quiet time at this time today or here’s the plan for the day, do what you will within very strong boundaries.
00:09:38 [Alison]
They’re not like that anymore.
00:09:40 [Alison]
Oh, there’s four different personalities, four different will, four different sleeping schedules.
00:09:45 [Alison]
They’re getting up at different times now.
00:09:46 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:09:47 [Alison]
They’re eating at different times now.
00:09:48 [Alison]
They don’t wanna do the same thing.
00:09:50 [Alison]
One wants to go
00:09:50 [Alison]
to the pool, one wants to do nothing, One wants it.
00:09:53 [Alison]
So even when I was like, I got nothing to do today.
00:09:55 [Alison]
Guys, we’re gonna hang out this whole afternoon.
00:09:57 [Alison]
It was like, I don’t wanna go to the pool.
00:09:58 [Alison]
I wanna go with soda.
00:09:59 [Alison]
And it was just like the most brain stretchy.
00:10:02 [Alison]
I don’t even know how to explain it.
00:10:03 [Alison]
So it was just it was really chaotic.
00:10:05 [Alison]
And I think that was why.
00:10:06 [Alison]
I was trying to not only manage them to do what they need to wanna do, but also keeping them happy and wanting them to have some freedom and some summer experiences, but also having to do my work.
00:10:16 [Alison]
When inquiries were blowing up and I was changing my workflow, woof, it was a lot.
00:10:24 [Alison]
But I’ve got some new systems that I think I’m gonna experiment with this fall because it wasn’t all great.
00:10:28 [Alison]
It was good, but it wasn’t all great.
00:10:31 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:10:31 [Melissa]
What did it do?
00:10:32 [Alison]
How did it go?
00:10:33 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:10:34 [Melissa]
I mean, it it evaporated.
00:10:35 [Melissa]
The summer went by so quickly.
00:10:37 [Melissa]
So when it came to the kids, I do have ones that also get up at different times.
00:10:40 [Melissa]
I am er, and then I have, like, 10AM er.
00:10:42 [Melissa]
And then the one and then the youngest is, like, in the middle, so it’s funny.
00:10:45 [Melissa]
But I will say my kids are still tight and that they do everything together kinda thing.
00:10:49 [Melissa]
So Mhmm.
00:10:49 [Melissa]
They would go down to the basement and play in the playroom.
00:10:52 [Melissa]
They have taught their sister, like, Minecraft.
00:10:54 [Melissa]
So the three of them, like, are huddled up on the couch playing Minecraft if like, all day if you don’t stop them kind of thing.
00:10:59 [Melissa]
So Wow.
00:11:00 [Melissa]
We’re still in that phase of life kind of thing.
00:11:02 [Melissa]
But I put them in camp, day camp at their school every other week.
00:11:06 [Melissa]
So it was like four weeks out of the summer.
00:11:08 [Melissa]
So I thought, that’s not too bad.
00:11:09 [Melissa]
Like, two weeks of fun.
00:11:11 [Melissa]
And I because my thought was camp, balls to the wall, working on work.
00:11:15 [Melissa]
And then when they’re not in camp, I can focus on them.
00:11:18 [Melissa]
And I feel like it, like, backfired almost because we did not like, we got season passes for Kings Dominion.
00:11:24 [Melissa]
We didn’t go at all this summer.
00:11:26 [Melissa]
The plan was to go, like, every other week and stuff.
00:11:29 [Melissa]
It just never was happening.
00:11:31 [Melissa]
Like, weather sometimes was a play in it because holy moly.
00:11:34 [Melissa]
See, you’re in Hawaii.
00:11:34 [Melissa]
You don’t know what was going on here in Virginia.
00:11:36 [Melissa]
It was, like, heat indexes of 106, a 109, a 110, like, all through July.
00:11:41 [Melissa]
It was horrible.
00:11:42 [Melissa]
That’s crazy.
00:11:43 [Melissa]
And I went and going to Kings Dominion when it’s a 110 outside.
00:11:46 [Melissa]
You’ve lost your mind.
00:11:47 [Melissa]
But I just felt like they liked camp, and they liked the activities in camp.
00:11:51 [Melissa]
So I didn’t really wanna pull them for a day for, oh, let’s go do this.
00:11:54 [Melissa]
And then I am a workaholic, so if it was my work week, I was like, oh, this is my work week.
00:11:58 [Melissa]
I gotta do stuff.
00:11:59 [Melissa]
So I just felt like we didn’t do as much.
00:12:01 [Melissa]
And I don’t know.
00:12:02 [Melissa]
It was definitely good for having set work week stuff, but I think next year, I need to put more boundaries on those weeks that they’re at home.
00:12:11 [Melissa]
No.
00:12:11 [Melissa]
We’re doing stuff.
00:12:12 [Melissa]
Like, we’re figuring something out.
00:12:14 [Melissa]
Like, I’m not Yeah.
00:12:15 [Melissa]
A big thing.
00:12:16 [Alison]
You find yourself working when they were at home then?
00:12:18 [Melissa]
Yes.
00:12:19 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:12:20 [Melissa]
I did.
00:12:20 [Melissa]
I did.
00:12:21 [Melissa]
And that was somewhat part of my fault too of things.
00:12:23 [Melissa]
It was just this summer was super weird.
00:12:25 [Melissa]
Like, normally with our clients, like, we usually have a one to two week turnaround for a lot of people.
00:12:31 [Melissa]
And this summer, just it’s been all summer long.
00:12:34 [Melissa]
Like, we’re still working on clients.
00:12:35 [Melissa]
Been back and forth.
00:12:36 [Melissa]
It’s just been, they’ve got kids stuff going on, then I’ve got kids stuff going on.
00:12:40 [Melissa]
COVID’s made the rounds, like I said.
00:12:42 [Melissa]
My last week, the kids were in camp.
00:12:43 [Melissa]
That was supposed to be a work week.
00:12:44 [Melissa]
I was down with COVID the whole week.
00:12:48 [Melissa]
Week.
00:12:48 [Melissa]
I was, like, in big naps, could barely do anything.
00:12:48 [Melissa]
So it was just really rough for that kind of stuff.
00:12:51 [Melissa]
So I had to work on those other times.
00:12:53 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:12:54 [Melissa]
But the good thing was, actually, my SEO clients went down dramatically over the summer.
00:12:59 [Melissa]
So I think we are not the only photographers that are like, summer happened.
00:13:03 [Melissa]
I don’t know when it happened.
00:13:04 [Melissa]
I blinked.
00:13:05 [Melissa]
It’s over now, but it was so chaotic and stuff that like, all of my coaching calls and co working sessions for our group coaching program, no one showed up all summer long.
00:13:14 [Melissa]
Logging club, on the other hand, we do a once a month q and a, and they’re not enforced.
00:13:19 [Melissa]
So I don’t know that.
00:13:20 [Melissa]
I don’t wanna cut down the amount of Yeah.
00:13:21 [Melissa]
Coaching calls we do, but I chalk it up to I’ve never had this problem, but summer summer had it.
00:13:27 [Melissa]
So I think there were a lot of photographers who were hanging out with their kids.
00:13:30 [Melissa]
We didn’t book as many group coaching students.
00:13:32 [Melissa]
We didn’t book as many done for you stuff as we normally do.
00:13:35 [Melissa]
And I think it’s just that people were with their kids.
00:13:38 [Melissa]
And that’s where the flip on photography happened.
00:13:40 [Melissa]
Because I booked all those membership clients, the income I wasn’t bringing in on SEO that I normally would have, I was bringing in on photography.
00:13:46 [Melissa]
So I was able to stay flush, thankfully.
00:13:48 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:13:49 [Melissa]
But it is going to my game plan for next year to know Yeah.
00:13:52 [Melissa]
Like, summer is probably gonna be slow.
00:13:55 [Alison]
That flip wasn’t necessarily intentional with timing on your part.
00:13:58 [Alison]
No.
00:13:58 [Alison]
It was just a happy accident.
00:13:59 [Melissa]
It was divine intervention is what that was.
00:14:02 [Melissa]
That’s a Divine inter That was I was just super lucky with that.
00:14:05 [Melissa]
So That’s perfect.
00:14:06 [Melissa]
So what I expect
00:14:06 [Alison]
So that won’t go into your marketing plan then for next spring.
00:14:10 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:14:10 [Melissa]
Because I’ll base and like I said, I launched the blogging club in May.
00:14:14 [Melissa]
And then I know, like, I had a girl, she message me after two months.
00:14:16 [Melissa]
She was like, hey.
00:14:17 [Melissa]
I gotta cancel my subscription because I just don’t have time to sit down and do it.
00:14:20 [Melissa]
And I was like, I get that.
00:14:21 [Melissa]
That’s it’s a month to month thing.
00:14:23 [Melissa]
You can do that.
00:14:23 [Melissa]
But it was a bummer, but she might come back in the fall or something.
00:14:26 [Melissa]
But it definitely showed me that it just people once the kids were out, barely hanging on.
00:14:33 [Melissa]
And then I think now things are gonna pick back up because everybody will all jump back in.
00:14:36 [Melissa]
It’s back to school for the kids.
00:14:37 [Melissa]
It’s back to school for us, back to work, getting on that.
00:14:40 [Melissa]
But, yeah, I expected more trips with the kids and more doing things and checking out local landmarks, and it just it wasn’t as much as I wanted.
00:14:49 [Alison]
Selah, Vy.
00:14:50 [Alison]
Going back to the new stuff.
00:14:52 [Alison]
So new offers, new software, what I did to save myself.
00:14:56 [Alison]
We have those two or three weeks with three sessions.
00:14:58 [Alison]
People were my kids were home, all that stuff.
00:15:00 [Alison]
I started using a new editing service.
00:15:03 [Alison]
I tapped on their calling.
00:15:05 [Alison]
So it completely changed my workflow, which was a little kind of like mind bender.
00:15:10 [Alison]
I work on automation.
00:15:11 [Alison]
I just know what to do and it just flows.
00:15:13 [Alison]
I had to change that up a little bit, but I started using Iconic Edits.
00:15:17 [Alison]
If you haven’t heard of them, they came out of Freedom Edits, which if you’re in Ben Hartley’s education at all, that’s who he uses or did use.
00:15:26 [Alison]
Freedom Edits was bought out by somebody.
00:15:28 [Alison]
They basically completely restructured the whole company.
00:15:31 [Alison]
And then the editors out of Freedom Edits went on to start Iconic Edits, which is not because I was already a Freedom Edits client.
00:15:37 [Alison]
And so I instead of just using their editing services, I was like, here, call my stuff.
00:15:43 [Alison]
And it is so good.
00:15:45 [Alison]
It is so good.
00:15:46 [Alison]
It’s a little weird because I feel less familiar with the images when they come back.
00:15:51 [Alison]
I feel a little less for the gallery reveals, but that’s really just it’s not really true.
00:15:56 [Alison]
It’s more like weird hokey feelings.
00:15:59 [Alison]
So the what changed was as I’m editing, so instead of going through and calling all the images, I just pick 10 to 20 anchor images that those to where I like them, the ones that I would probably use for a blog post or something, I send them off and I say, hey, there’s however many hundreds of images here.
00:16:14 [Alison]
There’s 20 anchors.
00:16:16 [Alison]
Please call to these specifications.
00:16:19 [Alison]
And then three to four days later, it comes ready.
00:16:21 [Alison]
It comes back completely, completely done.
00:16:25 [Alison]
And so I go through and I, of course, like, I go back and forth.
00:16:28 [Alison]
I always have gone back and forth and I’ll adjust like some masks and I’ll adjust like the temperature or whatnot.
00:16:33 [Alison]
And so I I get really in the weeds with those photos.
00:16:35 [Alison]
And then I prep their gallery reveal and then I sell them images.
00:16:38 [Alison]
Fantastic.
00:16:39 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:16:39 [Melissa]
I still use Imagine, but I have embraced this year just uploading it, having them cull it, and then I immediately send it back for editing.
00:16:48 [Melissa]
And then once it’s back for editing, then I’ll go through and I’ll pay attention to, oh, wait, this one looks a little wonky.
00:16:54 [Melissa]
Or, oh, hey.
00:16:55 [Melissa]
I remember there was another one in this series.
00:16:57 [Melissa]
Like, I had one with a dog the other week, and we all go with dogs.
00:16:59 [Melissa]
Like, you gotta look at every photo to make sure, like, which one’s the right one.
00:17:03 [Melissa]
And so it’s very easy at that point for me to just click over from the five stars to everything, find another one in that series, a five star, put it back to five stars, sync the edits over, and then keep moving on.
00:17:13 [Melissa]
And before, I was really anal about the culling, and then I had a lot of problems with my profile.
00:17:20 [Melissa]
Hey, fellow photographers.
00:17:21 [Melissa]
Melissa Arlena here.
00:17:22 [Melissa]
Does SEO feel super overwhelming to you?
00:17:25 [Melissa]
I get it.
00:17:26 [Melissa]
But guess what?
00:17:26 [Melissa]
SEO doesn’t have to be complicated.
00:17:29 [Melissa]

00:17:57 [Melissa]
Let’s get your calendar booked.
00:17:59 [Melissa]
Allison remembers me talking about this.
00:18:01 [Melissa]
Shifting from starting creating a profile that was Virginia based and then shifting it to South Florida and then getting it edited for South Florida and then shifting it back to Virginia, my custom profile for Imagine was a
00:18:12 [Alison]
I was thinking about that the other day.
00:18:14 [Alison]
It was weird.
00:18:15 [Alison]
It was so bad.
00:18:16 [Melissa]
And I just I was like, I don’t like I don’t know what’s going on.
00:18:18 [Melissa]
I was hand editing stuff.
00:18:19 [Melissa]
I did switch over to Caitlin James’ preset in Imagine’s.
00:18:23 [Melissa]
And then I go through and I edit it from there on making it tweaks more to my stuff, but I just embraced it.
00:18:28 [Melissa]
I was like, I’m not gonna worry about this.
00:18:29 [Alison]
I found with having iconic call because I was using imagine call, but I was have to I was having to spend more time analyzing those things, like you said.
00:18:38 [Alison]
And with iconic, I all I can explain, it’s so much easier because you don’t have to do that.
00:18:43 [Alison]
And I still have those others.
00:18:44 [Alison]
So if there’s, like, something where somebody’s eyes are open or I wanna head swap for some reason, I have everything.
00:18:49 [Alison]
It’s there.
00:18:50 [Alison]
They’re not deleting any of it.
00:18:51 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:18:51 [Alison]
But I haven’t had to go back and reanalyze.
00:18:53 [Alison]
Is this really the best one, like, at all?
00:18:55 [Alison]
And I’ve done 10 galleries with it so far.
00:18:59 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:19:00 [Alison]
And, it’s highly recommend iconic edits.
00:19:02 [Alison]
And I’m still using imagine to call the anchors or to not to call, to edit the anchors.
00:19:07 [Alison]
Oh, yeah.
00:19:08 [Alison]
So I just I flag them and then I set them and I say, hey, only it’s about a dollar 50.
00:19:12 [Alison]
I have imagine, edit those 20 images.
00:19:14 [Alison]
I tweak them, and then the whole catalog off, and I’ll see it.
00:19:17 [Melissa]
Oh, okay.
00:19:17 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:19:18 [Melissa]
Interesting.
00:19:18 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:19:19 [Melissa]
With you doing three sessions a week, I don’t know how you could turn all of that around and have your kids and a life and all of that without
00:19:25 [Alison]
having It was a true lifesaver because I definitely approached a point of burnout.
00:19:30 [Alison]
And it was, again, divine intervention.
00:19:32 [Alison]
I my family had scheduled months and months prior to come out mid to late July for a while.
00:19:38 [Alison]
And by the time they got here and so I had I had already been prepping.
00:19:41 [Alison]
There are no sessions this week.
00:19:42 [Alison]
I’m not doing gallery reveals this week.
00:19:44 [Alison]
And I I did all the communication for three to four weeks leading.
00:19:47 [Alison]
I’m not doing I’m not even taking discovery calls.
00:19:49 [Alison]
I am truly out of office.
00:19:50 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:19:50 [Alison]
And I got a lot of positive feedback.
00:19:52 [Alison]
They’re like, good for you.
00:19:53 [Alison]
That’s awesome.
00:19:54 [Alison]
You take it.
00:19:54 [Alison]
Enjoy it.
00:19:55 [Alison]
And I was like, thanks.
00:19:56 [Alison]
That’s like really satisfying and reassuring.
00:19:59 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:19:59 [Alison]
And so I had a true like fourteen days off.
00:20:02 [Alison]
I I shot a couple sessions that were already on the books, but I just shot them and I told them.
00:20:06 [Alison]
I was like, it’s gonna be an extra couple weeks before you get these back because Mhmm.
00:20:09 [Alison]
They’re done and I’m not touching them.
00:20:10 [Alison]
And everybody was really cool and supportive of that and I needed it.
00:20:14 [Alison]
I have never in my career as a photographer felt like I didn’t wanna do it anymore.
00:20:20 [Alison]
And I did.
00:20:21 [Alison]
Like, I was done.
00:20:21 [Alison]
I was, like, dreading the idea of coming out of this vacation.
00:20:25 [Alison]
I was dreading the idea of having to call and look at still on calling.
00:20:28 [Alison]
But and go through them and create galleries and do gallery reveals and, like, shoot again.
00:20:32 [Alison]
Like, I was truly, like, I that was the first time I’ve ever felt burnout.
00:20:36 [Alison]
And it only lasted a couple weeks.
00:20:38 [Melissa]
Right.
00:20:39 [Alison]
But I it led to some really good revelations and experiment experiments that I’ll share about in a little bit.
00:20:44 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:20:45 [Melissa]
For me, software wise, I’m trying to dive into Airtable.
00:20:48 [Melissa]
Actually, I have a thing VIP day with Colleen James next week where she does a lot with Airtable.
00:20:55 [Melissa]
She’s very much like systems workflow, Dubsado, things like that.
00:20:58 [Melissa]
And so she had a little mini Airtable course that I signed up for because her thing was like, okay.
00:21:03 [Melissa]
Hey.
00:21:03 [Melissa]
If you’ve got people in Flodesk and you’ve got people in, like, Thrivecart and you’ve got people in your CRM and it’s all over the place, wouldn’t it be great to have it all in one place?
00:21:10 [Melissa]
And I was like, oh my god.
00:21:11 [Melissa]
That would be amazing.
00:21:13 [Melissa]
Yes.
00:21:13 [Melissa]
It would.
00:21:13 [Melissa]
It’s that insane.
00:21:15 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:21:15 [Melissa]
And so she’s gonna I ended up I bought the course because I’m the type of person who likes to know, like, if something breaks or do I have questions, like, how does this work?
00:21:24 [Melissa]
And it was, like, a $150.
00:21:26 [Melissa]
It wasn’t that much at the time.
00:21:27 [Melissa]
But then I went ahead and signed up for the VIP day with her because she’s gonna set everything up.
00:21:31 [Melissa]
So now I can now I understand how all of that stuff should work, but now I’m gonna sit down with her and say, okay.
00:21:37 [Melissa]
So for my business, I would love it to do this and this, and I wanna be able to see if we’ve got a done for you client.
00:21:42 [Melissa]
Turns out they downloaded a freebie a while ago, and what’s that path and things like that.
00:21:47 [Melissa]
So it’s not for the photography side.
00:21:48 [Melissa]
It’s definitely for the SEO side.
00:21:50 [Melissa]
But, yeah, I feel like right now, I don’t know anything.
00:21:53 [Melissa]
Everything’s all over the place.
00:21:55 [Melissa]
I don’t I would have to dig to so many places to say, oh, this client is a group coaching client, and they’re a citation client now, and they join the blogging club.
00:22:03 [Melissa]
Like, to go all over the place to find that where when she’s done, it should all be in one.
00:22:07 [Melissa]
And I can see Sounds
00:22:08 [Alison]
like a systematic nightmare.
00:22:10 [Alison]
That that’s the thing.
00:22:10 [Melissa]
It is right now, but she’s gonna fit that for me.
00:22:13 [Melissa]
Do you guys are looking for help with, like, getting your workflow set up in your Dubsado CRM or something, like client onboarding and stuff like that, that’s Coley’s jam.
00:22:21 [Melissa]
So you can check her out, coleyjames.com.
00:22:23 [Melissa]
And she also has a podcast, Business First Creatives.
00:22:27 [Melissa]
And so she talks a lot on there about the systems and workflows behind your business on that podcast.
00:22:32 [Melissa]
So I highly recommend.
00:22:33 [Melissa]
She’s super fun.
00:22:34 [Melissa]
I have been on her podcast too, so you’ve got my episode.
00:22:36 [Melissa]
But, yeah, I’m falling in love with Airtable and figuring out using Zaps with it and automations, and we’re gonna move the SEO stuff out of Ta ve.
00:22:45 [Melissa]
Leave the photography’s clients there.
00:22:47 [Melissa]
But move the SEO stuff out and have it as its own separate thing with the proper workflows.
00:22:52 [Alison]
Woah.
00:22:53 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:22:53 [Alison]
I would need somebody to walk me through that.
00:22:55 [Alison]
My head didn’t just, like, visualizing what that might look like on the back end.
00:22:58 [Alison]
Okay.
00:22:59 [Alison]
So awesome.
00:22:59 [Alison]
So that’s what we have have been doing.
00:23:01 [Alison]
What and you mentioned your Airtable stuff, but what do we have going on currently for q three?
00:23:07 [Melissa]
So for me, I brought on another, like, subcontractor at the beginning of the summer to help with our done for you work.
00:23:13 [Melissa]
So just getting into the groove with that.
00:23:14 [Melissa]
And then actually, I had mentioned to her, I was like, hey.
00:23:17 [Melissa]
Do you wanna help me with marketing?
00:23:18 [Melissa]
And she was just like, oh my god.
00:23:20 [Melissa]
Yes.
00:23:20 [Melissa]
She is taking off and, like, doing amazing things.
00:23:23 [Melissa]
I actually messaged her the other day, and I was like, where have you been all my life?
00:23:26 [Melissa]
Because she had noticed something and then found the graphics and then fixed it and then took care of it and didn’t even ask, like, just did it.
00:23:34 [Melissa]
And I was like, you’re the best.
00:23:36 [Melissa]
That’s amazing.
00:23:37 [Melissa]
So getting into the groove with letting go of that work and just saying, yes, you go do it.
00:23:42 [Melissa]
I don’t need to be doing it.
00:23:44 [Melissa]
I think that’s a big thing with me of having my hands on stuff.
00:23:46 [Melissa]
So that’s q three, trying to develop a marketing plan and stuff for all of these things that I offer and have a solid foundation.
00:23:53 [Melissa]
I feel like we’ve just been winging it for a while, and it’s time to stop winging it and start actually creating a master plan.
00:23:59 [Melissa]
So that’s A master plan with my
00:24:01 [Alison]
dates and goals.
00:24:02 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:24:02 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:24:02 [Melissa]
And then finishing out all my charter bee clients.
00:24:04 [Melissa]
I got another a bit a mom in the hospital right now, just delivered a newborn session last week, got another newborn I have a maternity.
00:24:11 [Melissa]
No.
00:24:11 [Melissa]
I did a maternity session.
00:24:12 [Melissa]
That’s sweet tip.
00:24:13 [Melissa]
I’m like, I can’t even remember now because I was like, oh my gosh.
00:24:15 [Melissa]
Did I forget it?
00:24:16 [Melissa]
No.
00:24:16 [Melissa]
I didn’t.
00:24:17 [Melissa]
And then that baby’s due in September, so that’ll finish out in
00:24:19 [Alison]
my q ‘3.
00:24:20 [Alison]
That’s awesome.
00:24:21 [Alison]
Okay.
00:24:21 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:24:22 [Alison]
So same for me.
00:24:23 [Alison]
I feel like I’m just getting my legs underneath me from the summer.
00:24:26 [Alison]
We have a ton of, client orders that are dangling out in the ether because they’re dealing with the same things we are, like getting back to school, tryouts for kid activities, and just keeping their own selves above water and establishing their new routines and whatnot.
00:24:40 [Alison]
But for the next we have six weeks, last five to six weeks, I am actually gonna put a little bit more focus on the coaching side.
00:24:46 [Alison]
So work like flip flops, I think.
00:24:48 [Alison]
So I’m gonna be doing more putting a little bit more backend effort into not only this podcast, but like the website for my coaching, doing some more revamping of all that and taking my own advice for how to move my business and get more clients for the s c or not SEO side, for my coaching side with SEO.
00:25:07 [Alison]
So that’s my main goal there.
00:25:09 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:25:09 [Alison]
Currently.
00:25:09 [Alison]
I think I’m going to be doing some work cations.
00:25:12 [Alison]
So have I was supposed to take, a little work cation this summer.
00:25:16 [Alison]
It never happened.
00:25:16 [Alison]
So I think I’m gonna try to squeeze in at least two this fall, see if we can make that happen.
00:25:20 [Melissa]
Oh, nice.
00:25:21 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:25:21 [Melissa]
I have not had anything for that.
00:25:23 [Melissa]
So I wanna do that.
00:25:24 [Melissa]
I’m always like, I wanna do that.
00:25:25 [Melissa]
I wanna do that.
00:25:26 [Melissa]
It just does not happen.
00:25:27 [Alison]
So we’re still looking at two to three trying to do two to three sessions a week through September with one week off.
00:25:32 [Alison]
So out of that burnout and out of enjoying my week off with my family, I decided.
00:25:38 [Alison]
Like, two to three session two sessions is very comfortable.
00:25:41 [Alison]
Three is better overall on average if I can get one week of absolutely nothing.
00:25:48 [Alison]
I think if I can do if I can do one or two weeks of two to three sessions knowing that there’s a break with nothing Mhmm.
00:25:55 [Alison]
I think that would be a better rhythm for my body and mind than doing a sustained two sessions every single week.
00:26:03 [Alison]
And the weird thing that I noticed this summer is that there seems to be one week every month where everybody wants a photo session.
00:26:11 [Alison]
And it’s a different week every month.
00:26:13 [Alison]
It’s not always the first of the month or the third of the month, third week of the month.
00:26:16 [Alison]
But there is some week where half of my inquiries are for the same five days.
00:26:22 [Alison]
That’s And so I think I’m gonna try to map that out, see where those are landing, maybe do three sessions that week, and then follow-up with nothing.
00:26:31 [Alison]
I got nothing here.
00:26:32 [Alison]
For September, it’s gonna be a little different just because Colin has trouble.
00:26:35 [Alison]
And so I have a mandated like ten day window where I won’t have anybody to get the kids to school.
00:26:40 [Alison]
So that’ll be my break there and stick a few daytime work with military ceremonies in there as well.
00:26:45 [Alison]
But that’s my strategy.
00:26:46 [Alison]
That’s my little experiment with taking a full week off of sessions once a month, but stacking them before and after.
00:26:52 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:26:53 [Melissa]
That makes sense.
00:26:53 [Melissa]
I mean, you gotta give yourself a break.
00:26:54 [Melissa]
That’s a lot of sessions, I feel like.
00:26:56 [Melissa]
I know there’s people out there who shoot a lot than that, and they’re like, that’s nothing, but that I just know that’s not me.
00:27:01 [Alison]
When you’re full service and you’re doing everything from getting on the phone with them to what to wear, showing up, and then spending time with them on the back end and designing their work, like, it’s a lot.
00:27:11 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:27:11 [Alison]
It is a lot.
00:27:12 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:27:12 [Melissa]
Definitely.
00:27:13 [Melissa]
So what are Okay.
00:27:15 [Melissa]
So upcoming fall plans.
00:27:18 [Melissa]
You have your mini sessions.
00:27:19 [Melissa]
Are you gonna do some of those?
00:27:20 [Alison]
Okay.
00:27:20 [Alison]
So, yes.
00:27:20 [Alison]
So actually, I was just on my stories yesterday on the gram.
00:27:24 [Alison]
I do conventional mini sessions about twice a year.
00:27:28 [Alison]
I do them right before PCSCs, where moving and leaving the island.
00:27:31 [Melissa]
Oh, that’s a good idea.
00:27:33 [Melissa]
They
00:27:33 [Alison]
came to me and I was like, this is seems like a thing.
00:27:35 [Alison]
I guess we’ll do it.
00:27:36 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:27:37 [Alison]
And then in the fall, so I’ve had a couple people reach out to me.
00:27:40 [Alison]
I’ve got probably four or five people on my shortlist that I’m coordinating like, hey, what dates work for you?
00:27:45 [Alison]
What locations do you wanna see happen?
00:27:47 [Alison]
Because last thing I wanna do is create a mini session date and time and nobody can do it.
00:27:51 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:27:51 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:27:52 [Alison]
So I’m doing that.
00:27:53 [Alison]
I’m doing at least two dates.
00:27:55 [Alison]
Little secret, there may be a third date in there.
00:27:57 [Alison]
I don’t know.
00:27:59 [Alison]
Tangle that out there if we need it for November.
00:28:01 [Alison]
So what’s gonna happen in October?
00:28:02 [Alison]
Maybe September’s light right now.
00:28:04 [Alison]
Still learning the flow of travel here in Hawaii.
00:28:07 [Alison]
August is completely booked and has been for a couple weeks, but September is wide open.
00:28:14 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:28:14 [Alison]
So
00:28:15 [Melissa]
That’s Yeah.
00:28:16 [Melissa]
Because I know I was actually I had a field trip today for my kids and I was talking to my kindergartner’s teacher and the principal for the school.
00:28:23 [Melissa]
And I was like, hey, by the way, the kids were doing a vacation over Labor Day.
00:28:27 [Melissa]
And the kindergarten teacher said she was like, your kiddo is gonna be the fourth kid that I’ve been told is not gonna be at school.
00:28:33 [Melissa]
I was like, wow.
00:28:34 [Melissa]
And that’s one of the reasons we picked this school is that they’re very chill about that.
00:28:37 [Melissa]
They’re like, no worries.
00:28:38 [Melissa]
No problem.
00:28:38 [Melissa]
But I do feel like that’s we all talked about it.
00:28:40 [Melissa]
We were like, that’s that end of summer.
00:28:42 [Melissa]
And then at that point, like, it’s just focused on school at that point.
00:28:46 [Melissa]
So I could see that not being a like, that week could be a big travel week, but I could see after that, definitely, travel season has fallen off kinda thing.
00:28:54 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:28:55 [Alison]
It really has.
00:28:55 [Alison]
And there’s a very small group of people who don’t have kids in school yet that take advantage of that post peak season.
00:29:01 [Melissa]
Exactly.
00:29:02 [Alison]
But college is back in and September things in.
00:29:04 [Alison]
I anticipate September, October being pretty calm, and then we’ll pick up with holidays and holiday travel, and it’ll be nuts again.
00:29:11 [Melissa]
For me, I’m continuing forward with my decision on not focusing on fall family sessions.
00:29:17 [Melissa]
Oh, what?
00:29:17 [Melissa]
I just Last year, I was like, you know what?
00:29:19 [Melissa]
I’m not gonna stress myself out for this.
00:29:22 [Melissa]
I’m not really super interested in one off family sessions.
00:29:25 [Melissa]
I love my membership clients.
00:29:26 [Melissa]
So I like getting a client that I know I’m gonna see them at least four times.
00:29:31 [Melissa]
I know that I’m gonna watch that baby be a newborn, and then I’m gonna watch a one year old outline for those clients doing annual fall family photos, but I don’t like just getting a random, hey.
00:29:42 [Melissa]
We want fall family photos, and then you never hear from them again kind of thing.
00:29:45 [Alison]
Like, it’s just of mink.
00:29:46 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:29:47 [Melissa]
And being new here, I don’t have past clients to become those fall family sessions that I won.
00:29:52 [Melissa]
We are close enough that I have thought about doing I have thought about doing one mini session day, probably in Richmond, maybe one in Charlottesville, but and inviting my Northern Virginia clients and, like, putting it out there to them.
00:30:05 [Melissa]
I think Northern Virginia clients would probably more and do a mini session in Charlottesville because of the mountains and all of that kind of stuff that they’re Yeah.
00:30:12 [Melissa]
Gonna make the drive.
00:30:13 [Melissa]
But but I’m not super concerned with it.
00:30:16 [Melissa]
I might just float it out there, see how much interest I get in it.
00:30:19 [Melissa]
And if I get enough, then, okay, we’ll do it.
00:30:21 [Melissa]
And if I don’t, then I don’t.
00:30:23 [Melissa]
But I’m not driving up to DC to do mini sessions for past client.
00:30:26 [Melissa]
That’s just not happening.
00:30:27 [Melissa]
So No.
00:30:27 [Melissa]
I’m just gonna let that go.
00:30:29 [Melissa]
So, yeah, so that’s the plan there.
00:30:30 [Melissa]
It’s just not worry about families.
00:30:31 [Melissa]
I don’t even folk I have a family page on my website, but I I think I looked the other day and I was like, oh my gosh.
00:30:37 [Melissa]
You gotta get, like, some of these beach photos off you.
00:30:40 [Melissa]
I think I realized I hadn’t even updated it, which explained an inquiry I got for a beach session.
00:30:44 [Melissa]
I think it was Virginia Beach.
00:30:46 [Melissa]
And I was laughing because I’m like, why is she inquiring for a beach?
00:30:49 [Alison]
I have finally fallen off Virginia Beach to the point where I’m only tracking the main keyword that I was on, and I think I’m down to 35.
00:30:56 [Melissa]
I did finally try to attack those those last blog posts that were sending me traffic.
00:31:02 [Melissa]
So my inquiries for South Florida, even though I said it was, like, 25% of this year, I would say over the last three months, it has fallen off dramatically, which is what I want.
00:31:10 [Melissa]
So that 25% was, like, really the first six months.
00:31:13 [Melissa]
And, yeah, our focus really for fall is more group coaching students because I really love my group coaching program.
00:31:20 [Melissa]
So getting more students in, getting them help with their SEO, and then the blogging club.
00:31:25 [Melissa]
So the blogging club’s been super fun, getting people in there and helping them with their blogging and making it easy.
00:31:30 [Melissa]
Like, the feedback I’m getting from everybody is that it’s making it easier for them to sit down and create a blog post, and they don’t feel overwhelmed now by blankie cursor, which is exactly what I wanted.
00:31:39 [Melissa]
So Okay.
00:31:40 [Melissa]
Just growing those guys.
00:31:42 [Melissa]

00:31:42 [Melissa]
