Mini Mentoring is a series where Alison & Melissa get the low down on a real life business owner pivoting, relaunching or relocating her business. We’re walking them through the steps to keep it moving!
Susannah is a family and lifestyle newborn photographer moving from Minnesota to Knoxville, Tennessee this fall. We give her the nitty gritty on launching mid season with:
You can find Susannah at susannahrayephotography.com and on the Gram at @susannahrayephotography

00:00:48 [Alison]
You said you wanna do more newborns, so I would probably do a model call.
00:00:52 [Alison]
That, I mean, can be flexible.
00:00:53 [Alison]
Typically, I do free mini sessions, and I do get into mom groups and face group groups for that.
00:00:58 [Alison]
There’s a little bit of a qualifier there, but with model calls and maternity, like the timing, you just can’t pick the timing.
00:01:03 [Alison]
Right?
00:01:04 [Alison]
Hey, I’m Allison, military spouse and family photographer.
00:01:07 [Melissa]
Hey, I’m Melissa, also a military spouse, lifestyle newborn photographer, and SEO expert for photographers.
00:01:12 [Melissa]
Between the two of us, we have a combined twenty seven years in photography and have lived through nine business relocations.
00:01:18 [Alison]
We’ve coached each other through all these challenges, and now we want to share our experience with you.
00:01:22 [Alison]
On this podcast, we’ll give you to help you keep it moving.
00:01:26 [Melissa]
Alright.
00:01:27 [Melissa]
Welcome back y’all.
00:01:28 [Melissa]
This week, we’re super excited to dive into mini mentoring with a new victim.
00:01:34 [Melissa]
It’s Halloween.
00:01:35 [Melissa]
So but anyway, so mini mentoring is a series where we talk with real live people about pivoting or relocating their businesses.
00:01:42 [Melissa]
And Allison and I try to give them kind of the next few steps to keep their business moving while they’re moving their lives and stuff.
00:01:49 [Melissa]
I love
00:01:49 [Alison]
I love these.
00:01:50 [Alison]
We get to do it.
00:01:51 [Alison]
We like the surprise.
00:01:52 [Alison]
So we we’ve talked to her.
00:01:53 [Alison]
We know a little bit, but we’re largely with these details about the intricacies at the same time you are.
00:01:58 [Alison]
So I
00:01:59 [Melissa]
was gonna say, I know her name.
00:02:00 [Melissa]
That’s about it.
00:02:01 [Alison]
Yep.
00:02:01 [Alison]
So today, we have Susanna.
00:02:03 [Alison]
So Susanna, go ahead and give us a little bit about yourself, what you shoot, where you live, everything that’s going on.
00:02:09 [Susanna]
Great.
00:02:09 [Susanna]
Thank you.
00:02:09 [Susanna]
Hi.
00:02:10 [Susanna]
Yeah.
00:02:10 [Susanna]
Thank you for having me on the podcast.
00:02:12 [Susanna]
My name is Susanna.
00:02:14 [Susanna]
I currently live in Minnesota, and I’m moving with my family to Tennessee.
00:02:19 [Susanna]
My husband just accepted a job.
00:02:20 [Melissa]
What part of Tennessee?
00:02:21 [Susanna]
Knoxville.
00:02:22 [Melissa]
Oh, okay.
00:02:23 [Melissa]
Nice.
00:02:23 [Alison]
And then how long have you been in Minnesota?
00:02:25 [Susanna]
I’ve been in Minnesota since I married.
00:02:27 [Susanna]
So four years ago.
00:02:28 [Alison]
Have you been, working as a photographer the whole time?
00:02:31 [Susanna]
No.
00:02:31 [Susanna]
I’ve had my photography business two years now.
00:02:34 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:02:34 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:02:34 [Alison]
And how stable is your business right now in Minnesota?
00:02:37 [Susanna]
Well, I’m definitely at that point in the two years where I can see why lots of people give up after two years, because it feels like you put in a lot of work
00:02:44 [Alison]
and Yeah.
00:02:45 [Melissa]
Feels like
00:02:45 [Susanna]
you should be getting more.
00:02:46 [Susanna]
But I do feel like I’m really starting to have people that are coming back and feeling established.
00:02:51 [Susanna]
So I know I’m going backwards in many ways by moving.
00:02:54 [Alison]
I fully understand that.
00:02:55 [Alison]
Like, we move with the military every one to three years.
00:02:58 [Alison]
And so I and yeah.
00:02:59 [Alison]
Tell me more about what you’re feeling.
00:03:01 [Alison]
Like, what like, why do you feel like what’s going on that makes you feel like you understand why people would give up?
00:03:05 [Susanna]
It feels like I’ve put in a lot of time and me and effort Mhmm.
00:03:10 [Susanna]
Education to not be booking more of the sessions that I’m wanting to be booking.
00:03:16 [Susanna]
This fall has been encouraging.
00:03:18 [Susanna]
I feel like my SEO and everything is finally starting to kick in.
00:03:21 [Susanna]
Right.
00:03:21 [Susanna]
It’s a
00:03:21 [Melissa]
team of link.
00:03:22 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:03:23 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:03:23 [Alison]
It takes it takes time.
00:03:25 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:03:25 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:03:25 [Alison]
So what do you
00:03:26 [Susanna]
show?
00:03:27 [Susanna]
Family.
00:03:27 [Susanna]
I’m a family and newborn photographer.
00:03:29 [Susanna]
So Okay.
00:03:30 [Susanna]
Lots of family this fall, obviously.
00:03:32 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:03:32 [Alison]
And what do you want more of?
00:03:34 [Susanna]
I would love to do more in home newborn sessions.
00:03:37 [Alison]
Okay.
00:03:37 [Alison]
Okay.
00:03:38 [Alison]
That’s awesome.
00:03:39 [Alison]
And how many are you currently doing?
00:03:40 [Susanna]
Oh, it’s like all family sessions that I have booked.
00:03:42 [Susanna]
So three or four a month, which is what I like.
00:03:44 [Susanna]
That’s kind of the sweet spot for me with my kids.
00:03:47 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:03:47 [Alison]
For sure.
00:03:48 [Alison]
For sure.
00:03:48 [Alison]
And then on average, how many newborns are you doing a month?
00:03:51 [Susanna]
I’ve not really had enough to have an average for each one.
00:03:54 [Alison]
Okay.
00:03:55 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:03:55 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:03:55 [Susanna]
I’m really inclined to book it then.
00:03:56 [Susanna]
I’ve been focusing on my family side of the business, so I wanna focus on newborn now that I’m moving.
00:04:02 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:04:02 [Melissa]
And when are you moving?
00:04:03 [Susanna]
November.
00:04:05 [Melissa]
Oh, okay.
00:04:05 [Melissa]
So it’s coming up soon.
00:04:06 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:04:07 [Melissa]
So you guys know where you’re going, which is always the big thing.
00:04:10 [Melissa]
Like, as soon as you know, figuring that out.
00:04:12 [Melissa]
Yep.
00:04:12 [Melissa]
For where you’re at right now, did you do keyword research and stuff for your SEO to figure that out here?
00:04:18 [Susanna]
I did.
00:04:18 [Susanna]
I was kind of just researching as much as I can to know how to do keyword research well, but Okay.
00:04:23 [Susanna]
I think I’m showing up according to, like, my Google Analytics.
00:04:27 [Susanna]
I am showing up on the first page for several different keywords.
00:04:30 [Susanna]
They’re not super high volume, but I’ve been getting most of my inquiries through Google.
00:04:34 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:04:34 [Melissa]
And have you started have you started doing any keyword research for Knoxville?
00:04:39 [Susanna]
I have some.
00:04:40 [Susanna]
Okay.
00:04:41 [Susanna]
Yep.
00:04:41 [Susanna]
As much as the free version of Rush lets me do.
00:04:44 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:04:44 [Melissa]
Well, keep in mind too that I think Knoxville is, like, a bigger a bigger city and stuff.
00:04:48 [Melissa]
So start with the bigger cities.
00:04:50 [Melissa]
Like, when I was moving to South Florida, I didn’t know anything.
00:04:52 [Melissa]
Like, I knew Miami and I knew Fort Lauderdale, but I ended up getting most of my clients from, like, a smaller city, but that took me a year and a half to even realize that city was there.
00:05:01 [Melissa]
So definitely start with the bigger ones.
00:05:03 [Melissa]
Don’t worry so much about the little ones quite yet.
00:05:05 [Melissa]
Even though the little ones are powerful like what you’re seeing here there in Minnesota.
00:05:09 [Melissa]
I know I asked my realtor, and she was like, oh, your clients are in Boca.
00:05:12 [Melissa]
And I spent a year and a half targeting Boca to figure out my clients were not there.
00:05:15 [Melissa]
So that’s why I’m like, no.
00:05:16 [Melissa]
Just kinda go general and broad with the bigger cities.
00:05:19 [Melissa]
Then once you start getting clients in, figure out where they live.
00:05:22 [Melissa]
And then Yeah.
00:05:23 [Melissa]
You know, start looking for patterns on that.
00:05:25 [Alison]
Same thing happened to me.
00:05:26 [Alison]
I think I agonized for, like, eighteen months.
00:05:28 [Alison]
Was I targeting the right place in Virginia Beach?
00:05:31 [Alison]
Because Virginia Beach is part of this larger area called Hampton Roads, and it’s, like seven cities.
00:05:35 [Alison]
And I was like, where are these people?
00:05:37 [Alison]
Well, turns out it was Virginia Beach the whole time.
00:05:39 [Alison]
So the agony was for nothing.
00:05:41 [Alison]
It turned out my target client, my ego clients were actually down the street from me.
00:05:44 [Alison]
So Mhmm.
00:05:45 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:05:45 [Alison]
You’ll figure out those those neighborhoods as you become a more locally acclimated to the new town and the new city.
00:05:51 [Melissa]
I would start with just Knoxville for now, I would imagine.
00:05:54 [Melissa]
And just just doing the research on what is Knoxville newborn photographer, newborn photography, Knoxville family.
00:05:59 [Melissa]
Do you do maternity at all?
00:06:01 [Susanna]
Yes.
00:06:02 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:06:02 [Melissa]
So then definitely maternity.
00:06:03 [Melissa]
And then I would think about so is this the plan is to stay in Knoxville for a while, or is this a temporary move?
00:06:10 [Susanna]
Yep.
00:06:10 [Susanna]
The plan is to stay in Knoxville for a while.
00:06:13 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:06:13 [Melissa]
So I would definitely also think about, do you have a membership for your photography business?
00:06:17 [Melissa]
Like, if they come in, do you have a plan where they could do maternity, newborn, and family?
00:06:20 [Susanna]
I don’t.
00:06:21 [Susanna]
I’ve been thinking about it, but I haven’t implemented it yet.
00:06:23 [Melissa]
Yes.
00:06:24 [Melissa]
Absolutely do that because there’s nothing better than booking one client and getting three sessions from them or four sessions from them.
00:06:30 [Melissa]
I would definitely think about that as you’re moving and stuff.
00:06:32 [Melissa]
Because then too, when you’re targeting maternity and you’re targeting newborn, if you can get them in maternity and they book a membership, then you automatically get that newborn session too.
00:06:40 [Melissa]
Focusing on that, so Knoxville maternity, making sure you’ve got that.
00:06:44 [Melissa]
And then are you planning to make any business changes, like pricing changes or style change, anything like that before you move
00:06:50 [Alison]
or when you move?
00:06:51 [Susanna]
I have fairly recently increased my pricing finally from very Yay.
00:06:57 [Melissa]
Congratulations.
00:06:58 [Melissa]
Thank you.
00:06:59 [Melissa]
Do
00:06:59 [Alison]
it again.
00:07:00 [Susanna]
So that’s so I’m a little bit nervous about moving to a new area where there are lots of photographers charging 50 to $100 for a session.
00:07:06 [Susanna]
And I that’s not sustainable.
00:07:07 [Susanna]
Like, I can’t keep up my business for that amount.
00:07:09 [Susanna]
And I know maybe they did their business and it’s different.
00:07:12 [Susanna]
But
00:07:13 [Alison]
Mhmm.
00:07:14 [Alison]
So it sounds like you’ve done a little bit of competitor analysis of what you’re walking into with Knoxville.
00:07:18 [Alison]
Is that right?
00:07:19 [Susanna]
I’ve tried to.
00:07:19 [Susanna]
Yeah.
00:07:20 [Alison]
Okay.
00:07:21 [Alison]
Finding.
00:07:21 [Alison]
Are people sharing pricing on their website?
00:07:23 [Alison]
Like, are there similar styles and approaches to yours?
00:07:27 [Susanna]
Some.
00:07:27 [Susanna]
I probably need to do more in Knoxville because we’ve also switched which town we were moving to.
00:07:33 [Susanna]
He had been doing a few different places.
00:07:35 [Susanna]
So Yeah.
00:07:36 [Susanna]
I have to refresh my mind on which locations I was doing the research for.
00:07:40 [Susanna]
But I did find some that were sharing prices, and then mom’s groups are Yeah.
00:07:46 [Melissa]
Very good.
00:07:46 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:07:46 [Melissa]
Don’t look at mom’s groups.
00:07:48 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:07:48 [Melissa]
Do not look at mom’s groups and get pricing averages from them.
00:07:51 [Melissa]
Do not.
00:07:52 [Melissa]
I mean, we’ll do it.
00:07:52 [Alison]
Facebook’s not your friend there.
00:07:54 [Alison]
Facebook is not your friend there.
00:07:55 [Alison]
There are things that you’re gonna use Facebook for, but it’s not gonna be to to figure out your average pricing.
00:08:00 [Alison]
You need to start with your numbers.
00:08:02 [Alison]
Exactly what you just said.
00:08:03 [Alison]
What’s sustainable to you?
00:08:04 [Alison]
What makes you feel good after you look at your numbers?
00:08:08 [Alison]
Right?
00:08:08 [Alison]
Like all the expenses of maintaining everything.
00:08:10 [Alison]
Like say, the monthly expenses, the annual expenses, the ability to replace your gear, to pay your taxes, like tunnel vision that, and then you can see what you’re comfortable with.
00:08:20 [Alison]
Right?
00:08:20 [Alison]
Okay.
00:08:21 [Alison]
We want you to start with the membership.
00:08:22 [Alison]
We want you to do a membership.
00:08:23 [Alison]
You need to do the queue.
00:08:24 [Alison]
Are you blogging at all?
00:08:25 [Susanna]
Yes.
00:08:26 [Susanna]
And I’ve just started focusing more on that area now that we know.
00:08:30 [Susanna]
We’re moving it very quick.
00:08:32 [Susanna]
Because we went there intending to move somewhere else, and then he got this job in Knoxville.
00:08:36 [Susanna]
So
00:08:37 [Alison]
Oh, wow.
00:08:38 [Melissa]
It all happened really quick, I believe.
00:08:39 [Melissa]
So I
00:08:39 [Alison]
had moved
00:08:40 [Susanna]
all my website pages for a different town and then had to switch them.
00:08:43 [Melissa]
Oh, wow.
00:08:44 [Melissa]
Oh, bless me.
00:08:45 [Alison]
Okay.
00:08:45 [Alison]
So how long have you known that y’all were moving to to Knoxville?
00:08:48 [Susanna]
We’ve been anticipating it for six months that we’re moving to Tennessee.
00:08:53 [Susanna]
Okay.
00:08:54 [Susanna]
But moving to Knoxville, like, three weeks.
00:08:56 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:08:57 [Alison]
Okay.
00:08:57 [Alison]
Okay.
00:08:57 [Alison]
Cool.
00:08:58 [Alison]
Cool.
00:08:58 [Alison]
Cool.
00:08:58 [Alison]
So knowing the move is coming is kind of like anxiety.
00:09:01 [Alison]
Right?
00:09:02 [Alison]
Like, you know what’s coming, but you can’t do anything to prep for it other than just look at you and streamline it and make it the best it can be.
00:09:09 [Alison]
Right?
00:09:09 [Alison]
But now that you have a location and that location’s changed, now all the work starts.
00:09:14 [Alison]
You are running a business at the busy season somewhere where you’re already established.
00:09:18 [Alison]
You wanna book up as much as possible.
00:09:20 [Alison]
You need to create that reverse engineer, that timeline for how many sessions are you willing to do without going crazy?
00:09:25 [Alison]
How many can you, like
00:09:26 [Melissa]
And packing and all of
00:09:27 [Alison]
that stuff like that.
00:09:28 [Alison]
Packer all that in.
00:09:29 [Alison]
And your season.
00:09:30 [Alison]
Your season in Minnesota, I’m guessing, is gonna be a little bit shorter than in Tennessee.
00:09:34 [Alison]
Are you willing to shoot November in Tennessee once you move?
00:09:36 [Alison]
Do you just wanna cut off this and just focus on your family?
00:09:39 [Alison]
Like, that’s reasonable too.
00:09:40 [Alison]
Like, you could cut off and not even try to shoot in November, December and just focus on your SEO and your back end so that you’re hitting the ground running come spring.
00:09:48 [Alison]
So those are some questions you gotta figure out for yourself.
00:09:51 [Alison]
But you cannot log too much and set yourself up for SEO too soon because it’s gonna take so much time.
00:09:57 [Alison]
You’ve gotta do everything you can in your power and then let the Google gods soak up that juice and and let it run.
00:10:04 [Alison]
We don’t have control over that part.
00:10:06 [Alison]
Right?
00:10:06 [Alison]
So you just you can only do what you can do and then sit back and let it soak in.
00:10:11 [Melissa]
So Yeah.
00:10:11 [Melissa]
In the meantime too, she can hit up, like, Instagram and looking for hashtags that are Knoxville related and stuff and, like, getting your images into those hashtag groups and stuff.
00:10:21 [Melissa]
Like, that’s a more I mean, it’s not a sustainable thing because, obviously, then other people post, and then that pushes your photos down.
00:10:27 [Melissa]
But, like, while you’re waiting for your SEO and stuff to bake in, that can be a way too to get in front of people.
00:10:32 [Melissa]
Because I know, like, I booked, like, two people, I think, from Instagram before we left to go to Miami and stuff.
00:10:38 [Melissa]
And because I wasn’t showing up yet anywhere else, but I there in the short term.
00:10:42 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:10:43 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:10:43 [Alison]
And in that and in that term, and it depends on what, you know, between the holiday season and the outdoors and what you’re willing to do.
00:10:50 [Alison]
I would also consider once you get to Knoxville, and once you’re feeling a little bit like you’ve got your feet underneath.
00:10:56 [Alison]
You don’t have to have everything set up perfectly.
00:10:58 [Alison]
But I would suggest doing some sort of introductory offer.
00:11:01 [Alison]
Now you wanna do you said you wanna do more newborns, so I would probably do a model call.
00:11:05 [Alison]
That way your timing can be flexible.
00:11:07 [Alison]
Typically, I do free mini sessions, and I do get into mom groups and Facebook groups for that, the qualifier there.
00:11:13 [Alison]
But with model calls and maternity, like, the timing.
00:11:15 [Alison]
You just can’t pick the timing.
00:11:16 [Alison]
Right?
00:11:16 [Alison]
Setting up a page about what it includes, what it doesn’t include, the terms, the conditions, taking applications for it, doing something that qualifies these people, qualifies them as your ideal client.
00:11:27 [Alison]
But also, you wanna make sure that they take it seriously even if it is free or half price because you wanna be able to use this in your content.
00:11:34 [Alison]
Right?
00:11:34 [Alison]
Like, they need to sign an appearance release.
00:11:37 [Alison]
You need to be able to share the photos on Instagram.
00:11:39 [Alison]
They need to be able to be a blog post.
00:11:41 [Alison]
Right?
00:11:41 [Alison]
There’s something in it for you.
00:11:43 [Alison]
So there’s Well, and
00:11:43 [Melissa]
it match your style.
00:11:44 [Melissa]
So, like, when I started doing lifestyle newborn, I did a free model call because I wanted but I was very picky on they had to submit an application with photos of their nursery because I wanted to keep nurseries.
00:11:56 [Melissa]
And I didn’t wanna walk into something that had something, you know, a bed in a bag from Bye Bye Baby thrown up on the wall kind of thing.
00:12:02 [Melissa]
I was like, it needed to be curated, it needed to be cute.
00:12:05 [Melissa]
And so that can be something to think about, especially if you want to do like you said you wanted to do in home lifestyle, right?
00:12:10 [Melissa]
Mhmm.
00:12:10 [Melissa]
And that’s a good one too.
00:12:11 [Melissa]
Like, that one’s okay to post in mom groups and stuff on Facebook of like, hey, for some new moms, but you know, you have to you have to fill out this application.
00:12:19 [Melissa]
You have to send in photos of your nursery.
00:12:21 [Melissa]
Like, you can even be like, I’m looking for a particular look, you know, kind
00:12:24 [Alison]
of thing.
00:12:25 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:12:25 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:12:25 [Alison]
I’m trying
00:12:25 [Melissa]
to realize that because there’s no point in doing a free session or a discounted session for someone if you aren’t gonna use those photos on your website because then you just work for free.
00:12:34 [Melissa]
And, like, so 100%.
00:12:35 [Melissa]
That’s a big thing I always talk about with model calls is it’s for your portfolio you get to dictate.
00:12:41 [Melissa]
So even dictating, like, kinda what they’re wearing.
00:12:43 [Melissa]
Now I’m not saying, like, oh, you have to go buy this dress from wherever, but just, hey.
00:12:47 [Melissa]
This is what I recommend.
00:12:48 [Melissa]
Send me pictures of, like, the outfit ideas you have and stuff and that kind of thing.
00:12:53 [Melissa]
You’ll probably do okay with a maternity model call on that and then maybe using them to kind of figure out newborn and maybe offering them a little bit of a deal on their newborn session versus I think if you go out with a model call for a newborn, the only problem you kinda run into is either, a, they’ve already had photos done somewhere, which then some other photographer freaks out because they’re like, why’d they get photos done by somebody else?
00:13:14 [Melissa]
But, you know, they’re not necessarily looking for dad’s like, why would I wanna do another photo shoot that you run into?
00:13:19 [Melissa]
Because dad’s like, I’m not doing a second newborn session.
00:13:22 [Melissa]
And then if they haven’t had photos done, they probably couldn’t afford it maybe kind of thing, or they didn’t value it, which may mean that they’re not gonna take your model call as seriously and stuff, and it may not be the best fit.
00:13:34 [Melissa]
But I think if you were doing something for maybe a maternity session, that could be a good lead in for then booking the newborn session after that.
00:13:43 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:13:43 [Alison]
And I would suggest doing three.
00:13:45 [Alison]
I mean, you can take time over the course of six to nine months to do three while your SEO is baking.
00:13:50 [Alison]
Really being picky, but, like, saying that you have a limited number, well, hopefully, that scarcity will hopefully drive up people to, like, apply for it.
00:13:57 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:13:57 [Melissa]
And just keep your expectations very low on that.
00:14:00 [Melissa]
They’re not meant for making money.
00:14:01 [Melissa]
I mean, there are some people who do awesome jobs in making money, but for this, you really need to think about it as, like, I’m just trying to make sure I’ve got images if you don’t have a big portfolio.
00:14:09 [Melissa]
And then also too, you know, if you can find people who are the right type of clients and then having them share and refer and even starting a referral program.
00:14:17 [Melissa]
I was listening to a podcast this morning that was talking about that.
00:14:19 [Melissa]
And really, I thought it was interesting.
00:14:21 [Melissa]
The referral program was, you know, that whole like, oh, well, you can get a discount off your next session.
00:14:26 [Melissa]
But they also mentioned doing, like, a product credit for their current gallery.
00:14:29 [Melissa]
And I was like, oh, that’s an interesting one too.
00:14:32 [Alison]
Oh, I run mine.
00:14:32 [Alison]
So I am virtual IPS.
00:14:34 [Alison]
And so the session itself was complimentary.
00:14:36 [Alison]
They had to come to a session that I recommended at a time I recommended.
00:14:39 [Alison]
Right?
00:14:40 [Alison]
But then we got online and they did that.
00:14:41 [Alison]
They got the whole client experience with that virtual gallery reveal, but I gifted them enough print credit to get them the smallest item on the smallest three things on my a la carte gang.
00:14:52 [Alison]
It’s actually it was three prints.
00:14:53 [Alison]
And so they did get something out of it.
00:14:56 [Alison]
I didn’t want them to feel like they had to pay anything because they were doing me a favor.
00:14:59 [Alison]
Right?
00:15:00 [Alison]
But then they also could take that same credit and apply it to something else and pay that.
00:15:03 [Alison]
And that’s actually what they ended up doing.
00:15:05 [Alison]
So again, it’s not profitable, but like my costs were covered.
00:15:08 [Alison]
Right?
00:15:08 [Alison]
So and you just yeah.
00:15:09 [Alison]
I just can’t we can’t iterate enough, like, it’s gotta be usable.
00:15:12 [Alison]
Because the other side of this is you’re trying out new locations and you’re you’re experimenting.
00:15:17 [Alison]
Right?
00:15:18 [Alison]
But then you need the content and you wanna look busy, like, on Instagram, on your blog.
00:15:23 [Alison]
Like, you know what you’re doing.
00:15:24 [Alison]
Right?
00:15:24 [Alison]
It is the same light in Tennessee as it is in Minnesota.
00:15:27 [Alison]
The locations are just different.
00:15:29 [Alison]
Hey.
00:15:30 [Alison]
Yes.
00:15:30 [Alison]
I’m talking to you.
00:15:31 [Alison]
How are you feeling about this move?
00:15:33 [Alison]
It’s a lot to process, but I’ve got some.
00:15:35 [Alison]
I want you to grab my pre move checklist to make things a little easier.
00:15:39 [Alison]
Even if you’re not sure where you’re going yet, it’s not too early to start.
00:15:42 [Alison]
But you could be losing time on that SEO juice if you dilly dally.
00:15:45 [Alison]
So head over to alisonbell.co.
00:15:48 [Alison]
That’s Allison with 1l,bell.co, to get your pre move checklist.
00:15:53 [Alison]
You got this.
00:15:55 [Melissa]
Alright.
00:15:55 [Melissa]
So back to Instagram too though, because you’re trying to book more lifestyle newborn sessions, you don’t really have to worry about the season on that one.
00:16:02 [Melissa]
So you can take whatever sessions you currently have, and that’s a great thing about newborn is it does not matter where you live, whether you live in Minnesota or you live in Tennessee.
00:16:12 [Melissa]
Nobody’s gonna be able to tell that from somebody’s, you know, nursery kind of thing.
00:16:16 [Melissa]
You can go ahead and and take those images that you already have and start getting them out under those Knoxville newborn photographer hashtags.
00:16:24 [Melissa]
You can start looking at other photographers and, you know, once you go out, look at that Knoxville newborn photographer hashtag, see what other hashtags there are and stuff like that and getting things out.
00:16:33 [Melissa]
Instagram could be another spot.
00:16:34 [Melissa]
It’s a good place to announce, like, a model call or something like that, like Allison was talking about.
00:16:38 [Melissa]
But I think getting out, that’s gonna be a way to kinda get you out in front of people faster than blogging and SEO.
00:16:45 [Melissa]
And then I would just start with the Knoxville stuff when it comes to blogging.
00:16:48 [Melissa]
Like, keeping that as your focus keyword.
00:16:50 [Melissa]
I mean, do the research and make sure are there any other major cities around Knoxville?
00:16:53 [Melissa]
I don’t know.
00:16:53 [Melissa]
I feel like I should have a map up.
00:16:55 [Alison]
There’s some smaller suburbia towns in it.
00:16:57 [Susanna]
Got it.
00:16:58 [Susanna]
More suburbs.
00:16:58 [Susanna]
Like
00:16:59 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:16:59 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:16:59 [Melissa]
So then Knoxville will probably be the main one.
00:17:01 [Melissa]
I would say, we’ll we’ll send you the link.
00:17:03 [Melissa]
But for anybody else that wants to go out, we’ll drop the link in the show notes.
00:17:06 [Melissa]
But I have, like, a free blog post topics.
00:17:09 [Melissa]
And that one, I have some blog post topics where you just insert your city name kinda thing, and then you can write those posts.
00:17:15 [Melissa]
They’re a lot easier when you know, like, what the main city is, and you can start writing those and really gear them towards your ideal client.
00:17:22 [Melissa]
So and that’s another thing.
00:17:23 [Melissa]
Your ideal client, did you figure it out in Minnesota?
00:17:26 [Melissa]
Like, do you know what you’re looking for?
00:17:28 [Susanna]
I think so.
00:17:28 [Susanna]
Yes.
00:17:29 [Susanna]
Actually, I downloaded your freebie, and I’ve been working on those.
00:17:32 [Susanna]
So I just finished one yesterday while my kids were napping, and I was very excited
00:17:36 [Alison]
to nap.
00:17:36 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:17:36 [Melissa]
Good.
00:17:37 [Melissa]
So that’s the thing.
00:17:37 [Melissa]
As long as you kinda have the idea of what your ideal client is like then moving to Knoxville, you’ll still be able to think about that of, like, you know, are they brand new parents who have first baby and blah blah blah blah blah, you know, and gearing those those topics towards that kind of thing.
00:17:51 [Melissa]
So I think that’ll work.
00:17:52 [Melissa]
I guess the next question is, like, what questions do you have for us?
00:17:56 [Susanna]
Yeah.
00:17:56 [Susanna]
I’ve heard conflicting things about model calls for whether to do them for free or to, like, charge $50 or something.
00:18:03 [Susanna]
Mhmm.
00:18:04 [Susanna]
Do you guys think that it’s better to do, like, complimentary and then include some of the images?
00:18:09 [Melissa]
So the way I did mine was I included some of the images.
00:18:12 [Melissa]
Went into it with the attitude of, I need photos for my portfolio, so this is a thank you to them.
00:18:20 [Melissa]
I don’t think I gave them all the images, but I think I was like, you have the option to purchase some.
00:18:24 [Melissa]
And I will say this is where I kinda noticed that because I was doing a model call for newborn, I was getting people who they invested in the nursery, but they didn’t invest in newborn photos.
00:18:35 [Melissa]
And so there weren’t really upsells on it.
00:18:37 [Melissa]
Like, they were all not in a position to do that.
00:18:40 [Melissa]
But I think too, there’s a way of framing it.
00:18:42 [Melissa]
And I know my business coach and I were talking about it recently.
00:18:44 [Melissa]
I’ve done, like, some free SEO audits.
00:18:46 [Melissa]
And she was like, you have to stop, like, thanking people for signing up for your audit.
00:18:49 [Melissa]
They should be thanking you.
00:18:51 [Melissa]
And I was like, I know what you’re saying.
00:18:53 [Melissa]
Like, I’m the expert.
00:18:55 [Melissa]
Like, you get so just kind of flipping yourself on that end of, like, you wanna be careful about not being so grateful to them that they feel like it sounds terrible, but, like, they’re in power type thing.
00:19:04 [Melissa]
And I don’t mean it, like, in a negative sense.
00:19:06 [Melissa]
But they’re doing you a favor.
00:19:07 [Melissa]
You’re doing them a favor.
00:19:08 [Melissa]
It’s an equal relationship at that point.
00:19:10 [Melissa]
You shouldn’t feel like a lesser person that you’ve got to give them a bunch of stuff.
00:19:15 [Melissa]
Gifting, that’s absolutely that’s what I normally do.
00:19:17 [Melissa]
And I know having, like, a price tag, even, like, $50 can make people like, they’re gonna show up.
00:19:21 [Melissa]
They’re gonna take it seriously.
00:19:23 [Melissa]
But I think by doing the application and stuff, if they’re willing to fill out an application and go through that and send you photos and that kind of thing, I think that eliminates the need for having that $50 buy in.
00:19:32 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:19:33 [Alison]
What’s your format?
00:19:33 [Alison]
Don’t know that we talked about this before.
00:19:35 [Alison]
What’s your business model?
00:19:36 [Alison]
Are you all inclusive, hybrid, IPS?
00:19:39 [Susanna]
Yeah.
00:19:39 [Susanna]
All inclusive.
00:19:40 [Alison]
All inclusive.
00:19:40 [Alison]
So do you have any levels, like, you know, this this package includes just a handful, this package includes a few more, this is every everything.
00:19:47 [Susanna]
No.
00:19:48 [Susanna]
I’ve thought about it.
00:19:49 [Susanna]
Frankly, it got overwhelming.
00:19:50 [Susanna]
It’s like, well, I’ll have one price and it has client closet access.
00:19:55 [Susanna]
It has as much time as is needed to get the photos.
00:19:57 [Susanna]
It has all the best photos, and then I have a print credit with it as well.
00:20:02 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:20:02 [Melissa]
And, actually, you just mentioned client closet too.
00:20:04 [Melissa]
So sharing that and getting photos of that out there Mhmm.
00:20:07 [Melissa]
And stuff will be really Yeah.
00:20:08 [Susanna]
Really good.
00:20:09 [Alison]
What gallery software do you use?
00:20:11 [Susanna]
Cloudspot.
00:20:12 [Alison]
Okay.
00:20:12 [Alison]
They don’t have the ability to guard and, like, do a paywall for, like, yeah, you get three with this, but if you want more, you have to pay.
00:20:18 [Alison]
They don’t have that, do they?
00:20:19 [Susanna]
They have it where I can, like, create a coupon to
00:20:22 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:20:22 [Susanna]
Give them three photos for free.
00:20:24 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:20:24 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:20:24 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:20:24 [Alison]
So I would do that.
00:20:25 [Alison]
I wouldn’t charge anybody upfront.
00:20:27 [Alison]
You’re kinda dictating the stipulations.
00:20:29 [Alison]
I’m just gonna be at one of these three locations.
00:20:30 [Alison]
You’re gonna wear something for my client closet.
00:20:32 [Alison]
You’re gonna dah dah dah dah dah.
00:20:34 [Alison]
You agree to all of this.
00:20:35 [Alison]
You’re 18 and older.
00:20:36 [Alison]
You can you will appear on all of my socials.
00:20:39 [Alison]
Like, you know, you’re dictating a lot and you’re asking a lot.
00:20:41 [Alison]
And so I would just give them three photos for it because that’s exactly, like, my print credit because I’m IPS, my print credit covered three three prints with matching digital files.
00:20:49 [Alison]
And I charge $500 for that.
00:20:51 [Alison]
So I was basically giving them a $500 print credit.
00:20:54 [Alison]
I would do that.
00:20:55 [Alison]
I think that’s great, but don’t give them everything, please,
00:20:57 [Melissa]
for the lowest.
00:20:58 [Melissa]
Because that at least puts a little bit of a thing that their thing, you could have an offer where they can purchase the rest of the gallery.
00:21:04 [Melissa]
And you can you can make that a little bit of a discount if you want.
00:21:07 [Melissa]
You can kind of figure, like, well, this would have been kind of gonna cover my session fee or whatever, you know, and bring that down if you’re if you feel like, oh, you know, maybe they’re not gonna, you know, pay the full session price on what it was to get started.
00:21:18 [Melissa]
But, you know, you can definitely offer them the rest of the gallery as an upsell.
00:21:21 [Melissa]
And if they’re interested, they can do that.
00:21:23 [Melissa]
You may find too that you just think about it ahead of time.
00:21:26 [Melissa]
You may get pushback on, like, well, we just wanna buy another five or another 10.
00:21:29 [Melissa]
So just think about those questions ahead of time.
00:21:31 [Melissa]
And then as long as you have an answer, we’re not panicking when that question comes in.
00:21:35 [Melissa]
So just think through that stuff.
00:21:36 [Melissa]
But, yeah, I think when it comes to a model call, think about what makes you comfortable.
00:21:40 [Melissa]
I don’t think you need to charge for it at the moment.
00:21:42 [Melissa]
If you start noticing, though, that, like, you’ve got two people lined up and then at some point they just flake out and stuff, then you might be like, alright.
00:21:49 [Melissa]
Hey.
00:21:50 [Melissa]
There’s a $50 container fee, and it’s because people are flaking out.
00:21:53 [Melissa]
So Mhmm.
00:21:54 [Melissa]
You know, that kind of thing.
00:21:55 [Melissa]
Awesome.
00:21:56 [Melissa]
Hey there, photographers.
00:21:58 [Melissa]

00:22:40 [Alison]
Do you have any other questions for
00:22:41 [Melissa]
us?
00:22:41 [Susanna]
You have recommended tools for that keyword research for actual SEO beyond Oh,
00:22:48 [Alison]
many tools.
00:22:48 [Alison]
Folks.
00:22:49 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:22:50 [Melissa]
How much are you gonna pay?
00:22:53 [Melissa]
Well, like, I have a keyword research course that will then go into, like, not just, you know, Knoxville.
00:22:58 [Melissa]
I mean, you do have to put in the the other cities that are around.
00:23:02 [Melissa]
But in that course, we’ll also show you, like, how to find find things that also come up, meaning those keywords for things that aren’t necessarily photography related.
00:23:10 [Melissa]
So we do have a keyword research course for that.
00:23:12 [Melissa]
I mean, the tool we use is Keywords Everywhere, but the course walks you through how to, like, do everything in bulk.
00:23:17 [Melissa]
And then it’s got a lot of that stuff for photographers that’s prefilled out versus keywords everywhere just on its own.
00:23:22 [Melissa]
You’re just gonna be hand jamming, you know, a keyword at a time.
00:23:24 [Melissa]
I mean, it’s similar to Ubersuggest, I think, on some things, but, it shows up more in, like, your search result, like your Google when you’re on there.
00:23:33 [Melissa]
But it’s not very expensive for the year.
00:23:34 [Melissa]
I think I just paid it.
00:23:35 [Melissa]
It was, like, $12 maybe or something.
00:23:36 [Melissa]
I meant it might have gone up, but it was A free tool,
00:23:39 [Alison]
but it’s worth the money.
00:23:40 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:23:40 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:23:40 [Melissa]
For sure.
00:23:41 [Melissa]
So that’s an easy one.
00:23:42 [Melissa]
And then as long as you’re not having any issues blogging, like, you’re able to write the blog post.
00:23:45 [Melissa]
Because I was gonna say we have the blogging club where I deliver, like, blog post outlines and all that kind of stuff to you.
00:23:50 [Melissa]
But if you’re good with writing, you know, then you should be fine on that.
00:23:53 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:23:53 [Alison]
And how you blog matters.
00:23:54 [Alison]
It’s one thing to write a bunch of words, but if you’re not doing it to serve Google and user intent, then it’s kind of
00:24:00 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:24:00 [Melissa]
It’s worth serve your clients.
00:24:02 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:24:02 [Alison]
And
00:24:02 [Melissa]
Google likes that kind of thing.
00:24:04 [Melissa]
So really paying attention when you’re writing those posts about what your clients want.
00:24:08 [Melissa]
Like, I always use the example on, like, ask AI to help you write a post on date night ideas for pregnant women.
00:24:13 [Melissa]
One time it told me a trampoline park, and I was like, yeah, that’s not gonna work.
00:24:16 [Melissa]
So just keep that stuff in mind.
00:24:19 [Melissa]
Like and, you know, I always joke around that I’m like, my pregnant clients aren’t going to the bars and clubs.
00:24:24 [Melissa]
You know?
00:24:24 [Melissa]
They Yeah.
00:24:25 [Melissa]
They might be at a winery that offers a nonalcoholic option for the pregnant lady who’s now the DD kind of thing in the first trimester.
00:24:33 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:24:34 [Melissa]
Maybe not.
00:24:34 [Melissa]
I don’t think mine are at the bars and clubs.
00:24:36 [Melissa]
No.
00:24:37 [Melissa]
So No.
00:24:37 [Melissa]
No.
00:24:37 [Melissa]
No.
00:24:37 [Melissa]
No.
00:24:38 [Melissa]
No.
00:24:38 [Melissa]
So, yeah, just keeping that in mind, I think, as you’re blogging and stuff will really and then, you know, hitting some local event stuff for Knoxville.
00:24:44 [Melissa]
Like, those Allison’s had done really well with posts like that, especially when you’re new.
00:24:48 [Melissa]
Paying attention to mom groups, looking at the questions they’re asking.
00:24:51 [Melissa]
What questions are coming up?
00:24:52 [Melissa]
I remember for when I was in Miami, the questions were coming up, like, what doulas do you recommend?
00:24:56 [Melissa]
What midwives do you recommend?
00:24:57 [Melissa]
Like, so paying attention to that.
00:24:58 [Melissa]
What are the parks to take the kids to?
00:25:00 [Melissa]
Or what are the thing I I need to do something with my kid on a rainy day.
00:25:03 [Melissa]
What suggestions do people have?
00:25:04 [Melissa]
I mean, it’s like research.
00:25:06 [Melissa]
It’s really like going through these and, like, writing them out, but those are all good blog posts.
00:25:10 [Melissa]
Because people are asking on Facebook, they’re probably all.
00:25:13 [Susanna]
That makes sense.
00:25:13 [Susanna]
What I’m trying to implement as well is my email list.
00:25:17 [Susanna]
And so I’m hoping to figure out how to make freebies to go with that that will help build the email list.
00:25:23 [Susanna]
And I’m very much struggling with that even more so than blog posts.
00:25:26 [Susanna]
I just
00:25:27 [Melissa]
Coming up with a freebie idea or just putting it all together?
00:25:30 [Melissa]
Oh, I mean, easy freebie ideas, maternity and newborn type thing is what’s packed in your hospital bag.
00:25:36 [Melissa]
But if you’re going more Knoxville specific, I would look into more of, like, service providers that pregnant women are looking into.
00:25:42 [Melissa]
That’s what I always recommend.
00:25:44 [Melissa]
And then a good thing too, because you’re new let’s say you’re writing a post on doulas because those tend to be solopreneur type stuff.
00:25:50 [Melissa]
Reaching out to them and asking, like, hey.
00:25:52 [Melissa]
I’m new to town.
00:25:53 [Melissa]
I’m doing a post with all the different doulas in the area.
00:25:56 [Melissa]
Do you mind meeting for a fifteen minute Zoom chat because I’d love to interview for my blog or something like that?
00:26:01 [Melissa]
I have a client who is in our group coaching program, and she did that.
00:26:05 [Melissa]
And And while she was waiting for her SEO to kick off, she suddenly had doulas and stuff referring clients to her at that point or midwife.
00:26:11 [Melissa]
It was something she had.
00:26:12 [Melissa]
But, you know, thinking about that, that can be a good way to, like, start getting yourself established.
00:26:16 [Melissa]
Looking for those networking groups and stuff like that.
00:26:18 [Melissa]
I just went to one yesterday.
00:26:19 [Melissa]
We have a boss babes group here in Charlottesville.
00:26:22 [Melissa]
And as I’m sitting at the table, like, I was next to a VA.
00:26:24 [Melissa]
There was, like, a coach next to me.
00:26:26 [Melissa]
There was an attorney.
00:26:27 [Melissa]
There’s just all kinds of different people that you can connect with.
00:26:30 [Melissa]
And so even just talking to the VA, I could talk to her about partnering up on something for, like, my SEO clients.
00:26:36 [Melissa]
I’m talking to them about something, and she can refer me and I can refer her.
00:26:39 [Melissa]
So look for some of those local opportunities.
00:26:41 [Melissa]
Because, also, I mean, I just moved, like, a year and a half ago, and and getting into the community and, like, getting into these groups and, like, making friends, it’s hard.
00:26:48 [Melissa]
Because have you ever been to Knoxville before?
00:26:51 [Susanna]
We’ve visited.
00:26:52 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:26:52 [Melissa]
Do you have any family or friends or anything there?
00:26:55 [Melissa]
Oh.
00:26:55 [Melissa]
No.
00:26:55 [Melissa]
And you’ve got little kids.
00:26:56 [Melissa]
Right?
00:26:57 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:26:57 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:26:58 [Alison]
But you live
00:26:58 [Melissa]
at home.
00:26:58 [Alison]
Because you’re you are your ideal client right now.
00:27:01 [Alison]
Like, you’ve got little kids.
00:27:01 [Alison]
You’re gonna meet other people, preschool, churches, parks, playgrounds, all the mommy and me things.
00:27:06 [Alison]
Like, the kids are gonna be an asset to meeting people.
00:27:08 [Alison]
That’s actually gonna be pretty easy.
00:27:10 [Alison]
Yeah.
00:27:11 [Melissa]
Look for that.
00:27:11 [Melissa]
Look for activities to do with them and stuff and get out of the house.
00:27:14 [Melissa]
Because it can be hard when you move and especially have you moved before, like, a big Yeah.
00:27:18 [Susanna]
From Illinois to Minnesota when I got married.
00:27:20 [Melissa]
Okay.
00:27:20 [Melissa]
Good.
00:27:21 [Melissa]
So you already have a little bit of experience.
00:27:23 [Alison]
Awesome.
00:27:24 [Alison]
So to recap, because that was a whole lot.
00:27:26 [Alison]
I hope you’re taking notes.
00:27:28 [Alison]
Well, actually, it’ll be an audio and you can message you want.
00:27:30 [Alison]
Right?
00:27:30 [Alison]
You know where you’re going.
00:27:31 [Alison]
We definitely need to start targeting to those keywords.
00:27:33 [Alison]
You’re already blogging, so keep blogging.
00:27:35 [Alison]
You can’t do that enough.
00:27:36 [Alison]
You’re on page SEO and everything.
00:27:38 [Alison]
Melissa mentioned the membership.
00:27:40 [Alison]
This is a good time to create that program and launch it into the ether when you got all these new clients.
00:27:46 [Alison]
Right?
00:27:46 [Alison]
And then some sort of introductory call.
00:27:48 [Alison]
Like, we we really talked about the nuances of a model call might be the best for getting those more maternity and newborn clients in.
00:27:54 [Alison]
I would go ahead and create that structure.
00:27:56 [Alison]
What are the stipulations, the forms?
00:27:58 [Alison]
What’s that marketing plan gonna look like for the next three to six months?
00:28:00 [Alison]
How do it?
00:28:01 [Alison]
How many people are you gonna take?
00:28:02 [Alison]
What are you gonna give them?
00:28:03 [Alison]
And setting all of that up so that you can launch that out there as well.
00:28:06 [Alison]
And then reuse those lifestyle photos.
00:28:09 [Alison]
That’s can that’s the biggest trick you’ve got.
00:28:11 [Alison]
Right?
00:28:11 [Alison]
It doesn’t matter what city those are taken in.
00:28:13 [Alison]
Reusing those, getting that lead magnet going for your email list, there’s a lot to do.
00:28:18 [Alison]
Same thing, make sure you’ve got Melissa’s blog ideas checklist, because I think you said you already got it.
00:28:22 [Alison]
But then also the move your business checklist.
00:28:24 [Alison]
You are in the thick of it.
00:28:25 [Alison]
You are in the hardest part of it.
00:28:28 [Alison]
So make sure you have that checklist and just do the next step.
00:28:30 [Alison]
Like, it’s really easy to be overwhelmed at this to just be like, what am I doing?
00:28:34 [Alison]
I’m not seeing any return on all this effort.
00:28:36 [Alison]
And exactly like what you were saying, like, I understand why people give up.
00:28:39 [Alison]
Like, yeah.
00:28:40 [Alison]
It’s a thing.
00:28:40 [Alison]
Right?
00:28:41 [Alison]
But just put one foot in front of the other.
00:28:43 [Alison]
Do what you can as you’re able.
00:28:45 [Alison]
Don’t stress out and just just keep doing one thing at a time.
00:28:49 [Alison]
You got this.
00:28:50 [Susanna]
Thank you.
00:28:51 [Melissa]
That’s really Awesome.
00:28:52 [Melissa]
Yeah.
00:28:52 [Alison]
And then, of course, we would love to hear back from you.
00:28:54 [Melissa]
Hit us
00:28:54 [Alison]
up on Instagram about how it all goes on the end on the other side, like, maybe, like, three months, six months from now.
00:29:00 [Alison]
That’d be fun.
00:29:00 [Melissa]
Totally.
00:29:01 [Melissa]
Awesome.
00:29:01 [Melissa]
