Today, I want to chat with you about something that many of us face at some point in our photography journey – refreshing your blog posts when switching genres or locations. You’ve written all this great content over the years but maybe it doesn’t serve your new ideal client or your new location. So what do you do now?
Watch the video below or keep scrolling to read the summary.
I initially went through this process when I transitioned from shooting weddings to focusing more on portraits and newborn photography. Then more recently I did it again as we moved from Virginia to Miami and then back to Virginia but a new area. It was a bit of a challenge to say the least, but I learned some valuable tips along the way that I want to share with you to help with cleaning up your blog posts.
The first step is to evaluate your existing blog posts. Are they still relevant to your new direction? Do they receive traffic? In my case, I had to go through all my wedding-related posts and decide which ones to keep and which ones to let go. If you are worried that clients will be upset that their blog post is gone I can tell you I heard from exactly 0 people on that. I kept my sister’s wedding post along with 2-3 others that represented the style of my ideal wedding clients just in case I wanted to take on the occasional wedding in the future.
When assessing my posts from our moves I looked at which ones could be adjusted keyword wise and which ones just didn’t fit at all anymore.
If a post is still getting traffic, consider keeping it. You can always update it to reflect your new focus or location. For example, I had posts about Miami that were still popular, so I added links to my current location to redirect traffic.
For posts that are very location-specific, like my Miami-related ones, I had to get creative. I removed the location-specific keywords and made them more general to appeal to a broader audience. Posts that referred to a topic like Miami beach portraits just became beach portraits. Basically all the work I had done to establish myself as a business servicing Miami had to be stripped.
When updating your posts, don’t forget to change the keywords, URLs, titles, meta descriptions, and alt text to reflect your new direction or location. It’s essential to ensure consistency across all elements of your blog posts.
Cleaning up your blog posts when changing genres or locations can be a time-consuming process, but it’s worth it in the long run. By keeping your content relevant and up-to-date, you can attract the right audience to your photography business.
I hope these tips help you navigate the process of cleaning up your blog posts. Remember, it’s all about staying true to your new direction while maintaining a connection with your audience. Good luck with your blog cleanup journey!
