I'm so glad you're here
April 23, 2026

If you’ve been anywhere near your newsfeed lately, you’ve probably seen it. “SEO is dead.” It’s the headline that won’t quit. And the latest version? AI killed it. There’s even a shiny new buzzword floating around: AIO (AI optimization). Courses, webinars, ads, all telling you that you need to learn a whole new system to get found online.
But here’s the truth. The future of SEO isn’t some brand new thing you have to learn from scratch. It’s the same foundation that’s been working for years, and AI is actually giving us more reasons to make sure it’s solid. So before you panic or pull out your credit card for the next “get found on ChatGPT” course, let’s talk about what’s really going on.
But before we dive in—Hi! I’m Melissa—an SEO expert helping portrait photographers get found by dream clients on Google, without the tech overwhelm. Whether you want done-for-you services, coaching, or blogging strategies, I’ve got you covered. Ready to stop being the best-kept secret in your market?
Want the full conversation? Listen to the podcast episode with Alison & me. Prefer to skim? This post breaks it all down step-by-step so you can start implementing right away.
I’m going to give it to you straight. The secret to being found on AI platforms is the same secret I’ve been using for 15 years. It’s called SEO. The future of SEO isn’t some mysterious new strategy. It’s the work you’ve already been doing (or should be doing), just showing up in more places now.
I actually tested this recently. I opened ChatGPT without logging in and treated it like a potential client would. I said something like, “I’d like to book a newborn session. I don’t want a posed baby shoot. I want someone to come to my home for a casual session, and I live near Charlottesville. What photographers do you recommend?” Guess who came up first? Me. I haven’t done a single thing specifically for AI optimization. I’ve just been doing strong SEO for years, and that work is now paying off in both Google and AI search results.
And it’s not just my experience. I have clients from our group coaching program who are getting inquiries that list the lead source as ChatGPT. They’ve worked on their websites, they rank well on Google, and now they’re showing up in AI searches too. No new system required.
Here’s what people selling AIO courses don’t want you to know. AI platforms have to pull their content from somewhere. And where do they pull it from? Search engines. Like Google and Bing. They’re grabbing content from sites that are already ranking well and properly optimized. So if you’re not showing up on Google, you’re probably not going to show up in AI searches either.
The big difference is how people search. On Google, someone might type “Charlottesville photographer” and get a straightforward list. But on ChatGPT or Claude, it’s more of a conversation. People get specific. They’ll say things like, “I want a casual at-home session with a photographer who offers a client wardrobe.” That extra detail is where the future of SEO gets really interesting for photographers.
The good news? The future of SEO still comes down to the same core pillars. Let’s walk through each one.
You still need keyword research. You still need to mention your location and services. But the twist is this: AI searches let your ideal clients dig deeper. Someone on ChatGPT isn’t just typing “Richmond newborn photographer.” They might be saying, “I want a posed baby session in a studio near Richmond with hair and makeup included.”
So if those details aren’t on your website, you might not show up. Do you offer hair and makeup? A client wardrobe? In-home sessions? You have to talk about it. If your clients can’t find that information, then Google and AI can’t find it either.
Still as important as ever. Your keywords need to be in the right spots. Your header structure needs to make sense so Google can read your page properly. And if Google can read it, AI can read it too. AI really loves a well-organized website with proper headers, clear copy, and all the important details laid out.
Here’s something I see all the time: photographers with only 300 or 400 words on their homepage. That’s not enough. You’re going to want to add more, especially when you think about how conversational AI searches are. Your potential clients are asking detailed questions, and your website needs to have the answers.
This is the pillar most photographers skip, but it matters. Off page SEO means making sure your website is listed in places beyond your own site. Think Google Business Profile, Bing, your local chamber of commerce, and business directories in your area.
It’s about credibility. If someone can only find your business in one place and nowhere else, it doesn’t feel legit. When Google sees your name across multiple trusted sources, it helps establish that you’re real and credible. So, focus on getting backlinks, features, and keeping your citations up to date. You can also try to guest on someone’s blog, get featured in a magazine, or trade vendor features with other pros in your area. If you want to learn more about this, I talk about citations and backlinks in depth here.
Always my favorite, and honestly this is where the future of SEO gets really exciting. AI platforms love helpful, educational content. When you write about what to wear for family photos or how to prep for a newborn session, that tells Google and AI that you’re an expert. It gives them something to reference when people ask FAQ-type questions.
Now, I’ll be honest. My clicks are down. My impressions are way up because I’m showing up in more searches, but fewer people are clicking through to my site. That does go back to AI giving people quick answers in the chat. But here’s what I’m finding: the people who do click through are way more targeted. The click feels richer than before. Even though the number is lower, the quality is higher.
And people do still click through. Sometimes AI hallucinates a step that doesn’t exist, and you end up going to the actual article anyway. That’s why real, helpful blog content from a real human still matters. Keep blogging. Write about FAQs, your local area, and anything that would genuinely help your ideal client.
Here’s something that’s been shifting with the future of SEO. Social media posts are now getting indexed by search engines. We’re not fully seeing them pop up in search results just yet, but the indexing is happening, and AI is likely going to pick up on it too.
Think about what that means. That Instagram post you shared? It’s no longer dying after two days because the algorithm didn’t push it. It could have a much longer lifespan if it starts appearing in search results.
So if you’re already blogging (and you should be), take that blog post and turn it into your social media content for the week. Now both your blog and your social posts have a shot at being found through search. The future of SEO is about showing up in all the places, and this makes it a little easier to do that.
If you’ve been stressing about AI killing SEO, take a breath. The future of SEO isn’t a whole new system. It’s the same strategies that have been working, just showing up in new places. As someone who teaches SEO for a living, I’d be the first to pivot if this stuff stopped working. But it hasn’t. If anything, it’s more important now than ever.
We’ve already seen it. Three of my coaching clients showed up in AI search results before AI was even referencing source websites. They weren’t in the top three spots on Google, but they were on page one, and AI pulled them in. That’s the power of strong SEO. I’m still getting clients from blog posts I wrote in 2019.
